I wish #GitHub supported custom fields for the profile.

I tried setting the 🔗 field to the URL of my #Mastodon profile but “fosstodon.org” is not necessarily self-explanatory.

Thus, I’m now mentioning my Mastodon ID in my bio: https://github.com/rauschma

I’m hoping that more people add their #Mastodon ID to their #GitHub profile. That would help with finding, e.g., the authors of tech articles on Mastodon.
@rauschma Interesting idea, had not thought to look at #GitHub as a way to surface new tech voices on #Mastodon. But yep, that works: https://github.com/search?q=mastodon&type=users
Build software better, together

GitHub is where people build software. More than 150 million people use GitHub to discover, fork, and contribute to over 420 million projects.

@tchambers @rauschma I like this idea!

Just added it, GitHub markdown automatically creates a mailto href for plaintext federated usernames, which isn't ideal.

Replaced plaintext with a href to Mastodon profile page.

@tchambers @rauschma I also tried to toss a rel="me" on there to verify a GitHub profile (which would be super cool).

But, looks like their parser stripped it out! 😭

@rauschma Does GitHub support adding the rel="me" to the link?
@JamesLaverack I’m experimenting right now. Not sure.
@rauschma @JamesLaverack maybe in the readme.md (the new profile page)?
@JamesLaverack @rauschma yes, if you set your mastodon page as your "web site". E.g. see link and back link in my profile.
@JamesLaverack @rauschma from what I see it adds nofollow link and mastodon doesn't get that. I've copied an idea of creating a file in one of my repos that contains the link and I've added it as a link in raw format. That way I can verify myself in one of my repos 🤷‍♂️
@rauschma A hub for Gits, well I never 🫣
@rauschma mine is on Github but I was a bit dismayed when I tested the link to see "profile is hidden my the moderator" so now thinking that does not look so good ;-)
@danie10 GitHub does that? Or your Mastodon server?
@rauschma says the Mastodon server moderator so not GitHub. Did pop a message through to the admin now.
@danie10 Strange. That comment is not publicly visible, though. I wonder why they do that.

@rauschma all I can think is that back in 2019 I was using a Twitter cross-poster for a while and did get a warning about that. But I explained it is only for composing my posts as I post to 14 networks, but am active on all and respond in person etc.. I long stopped using it, but I see my posts are still unlisted.

Well let's hope it can be fixed as that warning when visiting my profile does not look very inviting ;-)

Good idea. Added in bio section. Now we need @github to add Mastodon as a separate field like they have for Twitter

@rauschma Really nice idea. It's a bit of a pain that the @ in the Mastodon URL automatically mentions other users in the GitHub profile (admittedly only a problem if your Masto and GH usernames are different).

I've added mine to my GitHub profile README, but I don't think that's as searchable.

@rauschma Good idea indeed. Added to the bio using the full URL (which is not clickable, but can be copy/pasted of course)

@rauschma

I put mine in the location field and it seems to work but agreed more metafields would be much better:

@rauschma could add Keybase link and have all your links on there
@rauschma while people are enjoying the benefits of tearing down centralized services; what would it look like to remove GitHub from this role as well?
@grumps Good question. I don’t know.
