So, many of us created an account here somewhere in 2018, including me. But I can't recall why we did that en masse back then. Anyone?

@maarten because @scott set it up?

I'm one of the few who stayed and kept connecting with my community here.

@maarten @scott or rather, communities. I participate in many little groups. Most of them were most active on the bird site, and they are slowly migrating here now.
@kristinHenry @scott Ok. But any special reason he set it up at that moment?
@maarten @scott good question. Why did you set up this instance at that time? Was it because it had gotten easier with masto.host?
@maarten I’m someone who should have. But honestly, I only became aware of Mastodon after the bird was set on fire.
@maarten It's weird, I was wondering the same thing (we seem to have set up our accounts within a day of each other in Jan 2018). No birdsite scares then that I recall and no vis/geo conference either.
@jwolondon Probably @scott setting the server up, and we checking it out...
@maarten @scott Ah yes. Just seen Scott's Birdsite post from Jan 23 2018.
@jwolondon @maarten @scott I vaguely recall something going on negative on the Bird site, but I don’t recall.

@maarten good q! i remember a spark of enthusiasm after @scott announced vis.social and invited folks to join. many signed up, but didn't have time to engage on both sides. thankfully @kristinHenry & @darth_mall have kept the light on :)

now we're in such a different situation. the new management over there is providing the arguments that social media should not be in the hands of few rich dudes and the fediverse demonstrates that an alternative is not just viable, but actually quite attractive

@maarten, neither do I. Something related to USA and Trump???
