for those of you who live in the terminal, toot is a really well executed text-based #Mastodon client.
$ brew install toot
$ toot login
$ toot tui
@ahrkrak this is what i love about mastodon, we all find a setup we like that is different 😄 Just like IRC
@ahrkrak I really like toot. All it’s missing for that perfect 80s feel is the ability to automatically render images as BBS-style ASCII art 😀
@drfyzziks yes! There’s a library for that, right? Shouldn’t be hard to add in…
@ahrkrak Yes! There are definitely several libraries that do that. I checked toot’s issue queue and there’s a feature request for full image support (in terminals that support it). But nothing about ASCII art. Might log a feature request, or if it’s quiet work-wise today, maybe I’ll take a look myself.
@ahrkrak @drfyzziks
one of them is https://sourceforge.net/projects/aa-project/ - it is also possible to use it for video content.
AA project

Download AA project for free. AA means Ascii Art - the AAlib (ascii art GFX library), BB (audiovisual demonstration for your terminal), aview (image browser/animation player), AAvga (SVGAlib wrapper for AA-lib), ttyquake (text mode quake), aa3d (random dot stereogram generator)...

SourceForge

@drfyzziks @ahrkrak …and download speeds so slow, you could read all content as it was loaded.

But a text based social network client still is nice

@cypherfox @ahrkrak Somebody posted a link awhile back about a tool they wrote that slows down anything you pipe to it to dial-up speeds. I thought I had bookmarked it but can’t find it now … will have to dig it up.

Here's the github repo so folks can find various Linux flavors and documentation: https://github.com/ihabunek/toot

@ahrkrak I personally prefer tut, but both are good: https://tut.anv.nu/

Tut is written in Go, for those who care, and the maintainer is very responsive to bug reports / feature requests.

tut - About

tut is a TUI for Mastodon with vim inspired keys. It features multiple-users, composing toots in your $EDITOR and viewing media in your desktop programs.

@skyfaller @ahrkrak And I'm also enjoying running tootstream, which is more CLI than TUI. Differently good.

@ahrkrak In my former life I was working as programmmer. Looks a little bit like cobol on 3270 terminals 😂
@ahrkrak very nice experience in the ui. #thanks for the tip
@ahrkrak Is there a refresh key i have not seen? The tui seams to only load on start...
@synchron i haven’t seen one either. Not sure if that’s “deliberate design decision” or “PRs welcome!”
Bruno Miguel (@[email protected])

@[email protected] this one is nice for scripting actions to interact with Mastodon, but it lacks the ability to auto-refresh the timelines. For that, I prefer tut https://github.com/RasmusLindroth/tut

Mastodon (PT)
@ahrkrak This is the tech I have been looking for…

@ahrkrak @chorrell

#Blind

Am having an overall better Mastodon experience with Toot!

@ahrkrak as is the tradition, can we rewrite it in Rust?
@prussianvelvet only if you tell everyone very loudly about it being written in Rust.
@ahrkrak
or 'apt install toot', for that matter. it's good, thanks!
@ahrkrak @qmacro take a look at that! I'll check it out in the weekend.
