Tiny Mastodon Tip 🐘✨:

If there are some topics you would rather not see in your timelines anymore, for example a certain Birdsite, you can use Filters!

HOW TO ❓

1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Filters.

2. Click the “Add new filter" button on the upper right.

3. There you can write the word or words that you want to hide from your timelines. For example things like “twitter.com/” or “Twitter” or “Birdsite” or something else or all of the above!

4. You can even set an expiration date if you think you'll want to hear about it again later on.

5. In the options when creating or editing your Filter, if you select “Hide with warning” the toots (posts) containing this word(s) will now be hidden and instead you will see a line saying “Filtered: {TOPIC}. Show anyway” You will be able to click on “Show anyway” if you decide you want to see the filtered toot anyway.

6. Alternatively, in the options when creating or editing your Filter, if you select “Hide completely” you will not see anything at all in your timelines when filtered content is posted.

7. Enjoy! 😌

@Em0nM4stodon well...titties! Thanks!
@Em0nM4stodon despite all of these tools, people would rather shame others on their content topics and lack of CWs. 😬
@Em0nM4stodon why I cannot use the : unverified : like yours on my acc? Is it because I am from different server? What am I supposed to do if want to use emojis like yours? #newbie here
@Em0nM4stodon Can I change my associated email account?
@Em0nM4stodon ooh we should also try and use proper names for things then.
"the bad place" etc is a bit cute, but will mess up others filters.
@Nsr2 @Em0nM4stodon I've been using "Birdsite" as a kind of compromise there. Seems pretty common so hopefully most will know to filter it.

> 5. You will see these posts hidden as for Content Warnings and you will be able to click on “Show More” to see them OR you can enable “Drop instead of hide” or “Hide completely” in the options to not see anything at all in your timelines.

I think that part is a Mastodon 4.0.0 feature. Can't wait to get it on my instance :)

@Em0nM4stodon Ta. It was "Drop instead of hide" that I was missing. Now, I hope, I'll see no evidence at all of #bbcqt toots.

@Em0nM4stodon I can set filters with an expiration date?!?! 🤯 🤯 🤯

What a brilliant idea! ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Thank you for the tip! 🙂

@Em0nM4stodon
HI! Are "Twitter" and "twitter" case sensitive? Does it matter how I type it in the filter? Thank-you for the help!

@Em0nM4stodon

Top tip. You can do this on the android app as well.

@Em0nM4stodon
Hi, thank you.
Do you (or anyone) know where I can set up filters on my android app?
Thanks ☺️👍🏼
@Em0nM4stodon make certain you copy the item before you go to do this.... because I have been caught out so often and my memory is not as good as it was
@Em0nM4stodon ah so muting here actually works, unlike the mute over there? Thanks for all the newbie tips 👍
@Em0nM4stodon Oops, adding "Twitter" would hide your post! 😂😂😂
@Em0nM4stodon Hi. I’m a newb. Just joined but having trouble accessing Account Settings. Doesn’t like my email or password (doesn’t say which). I’m logged in but am afraid to log out. How can I reach the admin for help?
@policano @Em0nM4stodon Make sure you are using the login page that corresponds to the server you're in!
In your case, you must login to mastodon.world, not something else like mastodon.social.
In my case, I have to login to socel.net, not mastodon.world or mastodon.social.
Maybe Googling "mastodon.world login" should help.
Let me know if that works! ❤️
@policano Hey Rob! Try logging in using https://mastodon.world/auth/sign_in, your email and password should work!
Mastodon

@Em0nM4stodon Thank you, that’s a great tip.
@Em0nM4stodon does that only work on hashtags or also body text?

@Em0nM4stodon

"Tiny" Mastodon tip???

hardly. this step by step is what I need to give it a try. had such frustrating experiences with filters on other platforms/ apps that I hadn't looked at Mastodon's filters yet.

thanks!

@Em0nM4stodon is there a way to add filters from the app (either Mastodon or Tusky for android)? Or is it a desktop-only feature?
