Hey, people (like me) moving to #Mastodon from #Twitter! If you've set up automatic crossposting from Twitter to here, please consider turning it off. I don't think it works well; formatting often looks odd, but also as you can't really engage, because replies don't end up on Twitter. But mainly because I think it's disrespectful to the Mastodon community; almost as if you can't be bothered to engage here. If you've got something to say here, say it *here*. That's my strong suggestion!
I myself made the same 'mistake' and set up crossposting from Twitter, for a few days. But I soon realised that it was a mistake and turned it off. I hope, if you're currently crossposting, that you will consider turning it off too.
@posen @posen For the time being I may continue to crosspost. Both ways, but not everything I post.
In many cases the toot/tweet will be drawing attention to events or third party content. Yes I have read mastodon.help and I understand why this is frowned upon. But I also know why I post what I post and, given the reasons quite so many of us are exploring Mastodon just now, and the undeniable significance of Twitter in UK politics, some crossposting makes sense.
@alangwardrop Hi Alan, I don't have any issue with manual crossposting. I agree with you that thoughtful crossposting could easily make sense. My issue is with *automatic* crossposting that just dumps everything from someone's Twitter account (including RTs) here. That doesn't make sense at all as far as I am concerned.
@posen I agree Mark. I thought about cross posting but decided against it for the reasons you set out.
@posen
I agree ! Apart from anything else - if you’re leaving tw*tree because you don’t like it - why remain involved there?
@posen
Agree. This isn't twitter & we shouldn't expect it to be.
We're the incomers here. We need to adapt to the platform, not force it to change.
@posen Also if someone follows you here AND there, it can get stale if they see the same content twice.
@posen Agree and it’s not being CW’d. I have come here to escape the barrage of political ‘stuff’. I want to choose to view it. I will unfollow those just auto cross posting.
@posen Also, you can’t use the content warning feature when crossposting!
@posen I’ve turned mine off for this reason and also I usually post food pictures on Twitter which can be upsetting to some people on here.

@posen

I post the same stuff in both places because I want people to use both, until everybody is here. Then we stop going there.

@posen I told the guy hosting an instance for journalists the same thing. Many of those users were crossposting from Twitter at scale which was maddening.
@posen Cross posting? I deactivated that sh*t!! :)
@posen I feel like with today’s news Twitter has only a few moments left- some ppl are not going to like Mastadon - so I wish they would leave. And we can make a lovely community here. The cross posting is a bad look- agree
@posen @Brittca I found one that works, formatting looks uniform/easy to read. I have a Mastodon client running (Sengi) so I can engage toots. Totally agree, turned it off.
@posen totally agree. We shouldn’t be trying to replicate something that clearly wasn’t working…
@posen @DavidPriess - well said - in addition, to the best of my knowledge, cross-tweets don’t include a CW, which is considered appropriate etiquette for political/controversial posts on Mastodon.
@posen find a cross posting program and only cross post from Mastodon to the bird site. At first I was having it do both. Realized why would I come here but post from the other. I want to be here so I stopped doing that pretty quickly.
@posen Absolutely yes. I consider this entirely relearning and starting over and I’m glad to do it.
@posen Agreed! After just a couple of days here, it was clear that my initial thought - that I’d want to cross-post - was wrong. This is a much different place (and so glad it is!) I’m still learning my way around, but the conversational, thoughtful experience I’m having here is not at all analogous to the bird site experience.
@posen i filtered out “RT” and im much happier. I can go to Twitter to see what I’m missing here, but it’s a choice. I don’t miss it as much as i thought i would.
@ljfxiki What a good idea. Why didn't I think of that!
@posen I just filtered all that out. A lot of people haven’t yet figured out that they don’t need to act like they do on Musky Twatter.
@posen Agree with this completely... If those excellent commentators using cross-posting services actually took the time to research and understand the history and adopted etiquette on #Mastodon , I'm sure many would change this approach... Not least; cross-posts without #CW where appropriate will commonly not get re-blogged, meaning those posting undermine their own potential engagement. Eventually, I understand, such content will get blocked by Instance admin.

@posen

Exactly. Its so discourteous !
