Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: How should conversation design deal with interruption? w/ Saul Albert, Cathy Pearl, & Elizabeth Stokoe. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
We often talk over other people – by accident or by design. We start typing a message while someone else is typing – on messaging apps including chatbots. But with machines, we've been trained to talk in a less natural way--to wait until it finishes speaking, even when it would make sense to interrupt. As conversational user interfaces proliferate, there are good reasons to think about using interruption as a resource in conversation design. The aim of this session is to explore what we mean by ‘interruption’ and build a taxonomy to describe different types of interruption – from a one-size-fits-all sense of ‘barge-in’ and the simple use of 'wake words' as interruption cues, to the discrete and multiple types that conversation analysis has identified. Even though the technology for synthesizing interruption and incremental speech recognition might not be here yet, we consider the kind of moonshots that conversation designers can reach for by leveraging a richer understanding of the variety of overlapping talk. Join Saul Albert, Cathy Pearl & Elizabeth Stokoe for an exclusive Expert Class on Conversation Design Dealing with Interruption open to the whole Conversational Community!
