We (Kevin Whitehead, Geoff Raymond, and I) are very happy to announce a new book: Categories in Social Interaction - out now from Routledge. In it, we investigate categories from the most mundane to those most strongly associated with power and privilege. By examining the reciprocal relationships between categorial phenomena and the basic structures of social interaction, we aim to provide a new integration of CA and MCA #EMCA

A sunny afternoon in #Cambridge with Eunice (Dr Eunice Fisher who, after 30 years of post-PhD friendship, I still refer to as my #EMCA #PhD supervisor) πŸŒΏπŸŒΊπŸ’šπŸ©·
I'm finally attending CARM training by @LizStokoe and I'm loving it so far! So exciting to get to understand - through an open, honest account - how someone arrives at building a powerful tool like CARM, and to see how #conversationanlysis makes a real difference in the world😍
Today is my final day as Prof II at the University of Southeastern Norway (USN). It's been nine years since my first visit, after Prof Karianne Skovholt's delightful invitation arrived in 2015. Tusen takk to her, to USN, and to everyone I've worked with since then. I'm sure I'll return!

Next week, as part of Conversation Design Institute's Beyond Boundaries Festival in Barcelona, I'm delighted to be taking part in this Fireside Chat and Networking Event with Women in Voice - LisaTalia Moretti, Tanya Van Gastel, and host Deborah Akinyele #CxD #Voice

Next was an amazing talk by @LizStokoe on the degree to which "conversational" technologies are actually conversational at the LSE. Given the parrots on the opening slide you know where Stokoe is going, and she brings some absolutely devastating examples on the limitations of these technologies. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiSSPiMjCoU (4/7) #AI #LLMs

Encountering Autonomous Robots on Public Streets β€” loving this paper by Hannah Pelikan, @5tuartreeves and @mncantarutti in which they show that the 'autonomy' of autonomous robots only exists in virtue of the human work of granting them passage and letting them be

(Also reminds me of Benjamin Lipp's work on "Caring for robots", in which he showed that robots in healthcare settings often are more brittle and need more care than residents themselves)
