One thing that the last few days has reminded me of - I really think we need a law on the books that states any government agency (police, fire etc.) has to provide public safety updates, such as press releases, via at least one non-commercial channel that is freely accessible without registration.

Right now, there are plenty of them that only post to Facebook or the Birdsite. Posting public safety info to those places should be an AND rather than an OR.
