Tips of the day for the Bird Diaspora:

(1) Practice self-awareness. This network is a community, not a "product." We are members not customers or bosses.

(2) Log into your account on the desktop and play around there. It's a great way to listen to what others are writing about and to boost them.

(3) Ignore people like me if you'd like. I'm #NewHere too

@jentaub how did you load your banner photo?
@jentaub On the contrary. You're one of the reasons I'm here.

@jentaub

Hi Jen,

I have noticed that besides following people, that clicking on the bell (beside the Follow button) to get notifications when they "toot" helps a lot to get the traffic that I want.

I can definitely see moving entirely away from Twitter in due time.

@jentaub I'm stumbling, but perseverance I promise will win out! (in a year or two! 😉)
✌️🇬🇧

@jentaub It’s like netnews that way. So it’s like the 1980s is back again. But that’s a good thing.

I could set up my own server on my hosting account (where my [now ****Mastodon-verified****, I’ve got a checkmark!] website is hosted).

@jentaub One tip I just saw was to enable the 'advanced web interface' on the desktop version. It allows you to have hastags/notifications/ and home feed all up at the same time.

@sunol @jentaub Yes, it’s like Tweetdeck.

I hate Tweetdeck, but maybe I would like the advanced xface. Probably not.

Go to counter.social if you want to see advanced xface taken to extreme by default.

(I doubt much of the Diaspora will go there, because they are after paid subscribers.)

@sunol @jentaub Also one might wish to download their Twitter data, so you can browse your old tweets on the desktop even after the dang thing quits.

Best not to delete one’s account BTW, so no one can take your name and act as if they were someone others had tagged, or some such nonsense. Just set it to private if one wishes.

@jentaub Took me a moment to decipher the ornithological reference (being a birder, inter alia), but yes.
Was feeling a teeny bit smug at being an early adopter, but am actually quite clueless tbh.
@jentaub using the desktop site has been great to add to my follows! The android app is definitely a tidge overwhelmed considering, whereas I don't see that on my laptop. Using this on my laptop is also giving me strong "early adopter new social media platform in the early 2000s" vibes :)
@jentaub
Best way to start it is via desktop with the advanced web interface selected (gives it a tweetdeck feel). For mobiles then the 3rd party apps seem to work much better than the official mastodon ones - Tusky for android is very good.
@jentaub
Just joined - I followed you on twitter - am a bit confused how this all works.🤪
