#Introduction Hi everyone I'm Nate Wolff, assoc. prof of English at Tufts where I teach 19th century #AmericanLit. I wrote a book about political emotion in the Gilded Age novel. I like the book #MobyDick by #HermanMelville. I also like to #fish. I like to, uh, toot about amateur #dentistry in #literature and Moby-Dick. And #fishing. I especially like to #fish for a #SpecificFish that I #hate. It's a long story!! imho it's so normal to #hate a fish bc they act with #premeditated #malice
@natewolff Welcome to #Middlemarch Mastodon! ๐Ÿ˜œ
@doctorwaffle Is it just me or does "Mastodon" give "Leviathan" vibes, almost as though the platform itself prefers #MobyDick ? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค” Like something in the underlying code is obsessed with it?? as the best novel??? Yeah, that's a really cool and helpful way to think about it.
@natewolff MAST-o-don MID-dle-march ๐Ÿค” Both dactyls starting with "M".... It's almost like this platform's preference for Middlemarch is encoded at the most basic level of poetic meaning
@natewolff @doctorwaffle having read neither (i know, i know) I am 100% HERE for a knockdown, dragout fight between #MobyDick and #Middlemarch
@Kayray @natewolff You're our perfect audience....
@natewolff @doctorwaffle. Total MD vibes. I'm thinking the Cetology chapter -- the drive to and impossibility of classification, whatever "instance" one is seeking to understand. Oh, and did I mention how glad you're here, Nate?
@natewolff @doctorwaffle Iโ€™m still trying to figure out if the Kracken is a fish

@natewolff

@natewolff But, but, it's a whale, not a fish?! ... I think I just got baited!! ;)

@natewolff btw, giggled at the fish with premeditated malice. ๐Ÿ˜Š Reminded me of the multiple choice question test when I took my scuba diving license.

The question was: "If fish attacks you, what is probably the cause? I had to hold in laughter in the classroom when I read the option: "they planned it".

Need I say that the test was kinda simple to pass..

@natewolff Fascinated by the idea dentistry in lit. Never really thought about it๐Ÿค”. I will pay more attention in future. I also love Moby Dick, though not a fisher myself. Have no animus towards any fish, real or imagined.
@mpmccune2 @natewolff please donโ€™t get him started on the dentristry yet, his twitter followers, beg of you. There will be more than enough #McTeague posts coming our way soon enough, I assure you. :)
@Nicolemrizzuto1 My apologies to his twitter followers! Did I say I was fascinated? I meant completely uninterested and never wanting to hear more about!
@natewolff this is the best Mastodon bio I've read so far.
@natewolff Iโ€™ll be here as ever to โ€œfavouriteโ€ your posts. Thanks for representing #fishhate on here ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ”ช
@natewolff re hating fish you might appreciate this video my son made just last week which I've been searching desperately for an excuse to recommend to someone https://youtu.be/-5p9BFtLtOk

@natewolff is moby dick more about animal intelligence than it gets credit for? Trying to read more 19th century American lit and I read deer slayer next. Itโ€™s
@natewolff the nut. Premeditated malice. Reciprocity.
