Saw somebody on The Bad Place saying that joining Mastodon and finding all your people again feels a bit like surviving a zombie apocalypse and your heart lifting every time one of your friends walks into the compound, battle-scarred but alive. I can’t find the original tweet now, so I’m sorry not to give credit. But I keep feeling like that whenever someone I recognise pops up.

@alexvont @Cassandra That’s so true! But also, somehow I’m finding it easier to tune my network here more accurately to my interests. So, also new(-to-me) additions to my network are a welcome change!
@alexvont Definitely felt it when you followed me just now.

@alexvont

Somewhat hidden are those (like me) who lurked via Nitter but never joined Twitter itself. 'Ghost followers' who have come out into the light of day on Mastodon, in celebration of the influx.

@alexvont I know the feeling.
Here is a useful tool to use to find follows and followers from the bird site that have opened accounts on Mastodon...

Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@alexvont The "Bad Place" 😎
@alexvont I was just thinking how lovely it is that so many of my friends are here and we're finding each other
@katebevan @alexvont our experiences are all the same, which is why this entire thing is so goddamn fun. I think many / most of us have been hoping for some sort of exodus for years and we can't really believe it's actually happening. But it really is. Wow.
@alexvont @mreider @katebevan Yes! I created this account back during The Great Facebook Exodus That Never Happened. Such a different experience!
@alexvont that's so very apt! It's a little bit exciting every time I run the Debirdify thing and find more names on there than the day before
@alexvont Glad to see you here!
@alexvont Very well described! It does feel like that. It also feels like a much happier place. There was a silly theme on toot Wales yesterday #Defaidodon and it felt like the old days of cat Twitter before the whole thing became rancid and divided.

@AwkwardAda @alexvont

We're not done with #Defaidodon yet! 😁 (I've been at work all day, so I'm just catching up now)

@alexvont "yeah yeah I made it. And I found a giant meme stash just over that hill."
@alexvont I wasn't following you on The Bad Place, but following now for that tweet alone.
@alexvont LOL that we are calling it "The Bad Place" :) But yes, I am encouraged by how many of the people I would truly miss from over there (if suddenly Twitter ceased to be) are already here, or continually arriving.
@alexvont @Marplesmarbles that's a fantastic analogy! *bounds across the compound to greet, while chaos resigns outside*

@alexvont I literally thought you meant The Good Place. The TV show. And I was both confused and delighted they featured Mastodon there.

I'm with you now.

@alexvont I’m not actually much off a @StarWars fan, BUT… I was thinking it was more like when the rebels all evacuate their base on the ice world of Hoth at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, and then bump into each other on assorted planets thereafter.
@alexvont That definitely fits. Like we're scrambling around.
@alexvont such an eloquent and accurate description!

@alexvont Oh my gosh, SO MUCH YES.

It's so nice to get the warm and fuzzies again from being on the internet, you know?

@alexvont we need a shot of people walking out of the smoldering remains in slow motion

@alexvont

This one? (I boosted it so was able to search for "zombie" πŸ˜€β€‹)

@Cassandra yes! Thank you so much! Now I just need to work out how to quote-retweet ☺️
@alexvont @Cassandra You can't quote-boost on Mastodon. This is by design to avoid larger accounts dunking on smaller accounts and having their followers gang up on the original poster.
@alexvont β€œThe Bad Place” πŸ˜„ I like that πŸ‘
@alexvont Yes, and I feel like sending messages back to the Bad Place saying, "We got here. It's safe. You should join us."
@alexvont aaah relax and enjoy the fabulous company 😎
@alexvont I haven't seen anyone yet, I don't think they made it.

@alexvont

When you find people that you knew, instead of stealing their crackers and ammo you remind them that we are civilized here

@alexvont Just had that feeling seeing your intro post boosted into my home timeline.
