NOTE: I’m moving to [email protected] so if you want to follow me, do it there instead. Apologies for the extra step!

Former historian, current indexer. She/her, cis. Cats, nature, crafts, sci fi/fantasy. Chicago parent. West Coast ex-pat.

Twitter is not a good place to be right now. Brrrr.
Have some peaceful evening snuggle cats.

I think what I find stressful about the thought of moving to a new instance is that all of the smaller ones feel like special-interest clubs for people with Life Passions.

I… am not that kind of person. Both my careers are big-tent things that can accommodate all sorts of shifting interests, and so are my hobbies.

So I don’t know what to do.

Thinking about one particular set of pros and cons of early voting by mail:

It makes voting itself much more chill, but on Election Day you get that weird feeling of everyone celebrating a holiday you don’t.

A reminder: if Mastodon strikes you as less troll-infested than other sites, it’s because everyone is actively involved in flagging and shutting down that shit when it appears, not because this place is inherently troll-proof.

It’s not magical immunity; it’s collective action.

Which now includes *you*.

As the veteran of several rounds of “let’s flee this social platform for another”, what strikes me as different about this one is that the folks grumbling the most about losing their people this time are the ones staying on the old site. Usually it’s the would-be migrants lamenting that they can’t get their friends to join them in the new place.
Me trying to remember to enjoy the sunny, snow-free #chicago weather while it’s still here.
I have to say, I LOVE Metatext’s “extract text from image” function for captioning images. While you still need to describe the picture itself, not having to type all the text itself is amazing.
FYI #chicago folks. Whether it’s #covid or flu, #MaskUp
Love the brilliance of ginkgoes in fall. #chicago #autumn #trees #NaturePhotogrphy
