The Linux Legend@kathygriffin A lot of mastodon instances are getting swamped by a lot of people signing up for mastodon migrating from Twitter. It's pretty normal anytime there's a huge uptick in membership on mastodon.

@kkellogg @kathygriffin It can, usually it just require administrator to budget for more servers, so it takes time to configure it as well as clustering the database. You can scale quite a long way before reaching the bottleneck.

That, and @stux tried to upgrade the mstdn.social server, but somehow the provider didn't deliver yet.
In the meantime, to ease the load another server was setup: https://masto.ai with the request to some of the users to migrate to ease the load on the masten.social server.
I hope things will settle and the server upgrade comes through, but these are crazy times... ;)

@ygalanter @kathygriffin mine seems to move fairly well. I just picked a random one when I signed on and I guess I lucked out. It was slow at the beginning but is fine now.

@kathygriffin I see them quickly but there's only a few people on this server at the moment. It was very slow before I moved from the main one. Probably the #TwitterMigration still in force.

Francis Smith@kathygriffin Obviously no idea if you'll see this, but: yeah, I get the feeling some of the instances (the most popular ones, I assume) weren't really ready for this level of being suddenly inundated with users. In some despair I went with a server in Germany that had good sounding rules and was responding well, but... I think it's kind of a crapshoot until things settle down.

So here's the deal as I understand it regarding instances: You can sign up on however many instances you for some reason feel you need to. But presumably you don't want to log into all of those, and you'd like to just post from one of them! No problem. You can set the others to "redirect" to your main instance. For example, @[email protected] redirects to @rfrancis which means if you try to follow the former you wind up following the latter. Or so I believe! (1/2, as we say on you-know-where)

Fellixe@kathygriffin As far as server choices you're on one of the most frequently chosen for people just finding Mastodon. Since #twixit #twittermigration is so big an issue now that mean you're probably in a vulnerable place. So you might want to move, keeping in mind you'll keep your followers but might have to choose your follows again. I didn't keep my follows when I moved.

Yes alot of servers are experiencing delays. But it seems to be better at the moment.
You have a large following on twitter so when you join and promoted Mastodon, you likely brought a lot of users to the platform.
Which is a very good thing! But your server's admin is probably working on adding more capacity to accommodate the new users you have brought over 😃

I think the person running the server (@stux) has run into some trouble and is working on upgrading the infrastructure. I’m trying to wait patiently 😊.

Jos Bell@kathygriffin I only joined a couple of days ago but still find that replies don't always show up immediately. Think the servers are a tad overwhelmed by the Musky exodus 😅 Don't think you need to swap but it's possible if you find one that's less busy. We can still see guys on others by pinging between headers, which is more elooooongated than Birdland... 😁

As others have mentioned, this is happening to other servers too as #mastodon is where people are going in the wake of the dumpster fire at #twitter - just hang tight!

I probably should explore another server, as the one I am on shows up as "offline" about half the times I have checked, and still does not update my profile to show who I follow (although I do seem to have started getting to see posts from those people--and those people alone)
