Eight Mastodon apps for iPhone

An in-depth comparative review of eight Mastodon apps for iPhone: Fedi, Mast, Mastodon, Mercury, Metatext, tooot, Toot! and Tootle.

@transponderings Thanks for this! Really informative, I'm now off to download Toot! (Had been using the official app until now)

@aimee @transponderings I'm really enjoying @tootapp. It's so much fun using it.

Hope that @WAHa_06x36 / Dag ร…gren doesn't drop the support for it. ๐Ÿฅบ

@transponderings Have settled in with Metatext for my mobile fediverse needs for the past few months. As your review said, none of these are perfect, but itโ€™s good to see so many folks trying to Make It Work Well!
@transponderings awesome! always wanted to know the differences between them. this will come as a handy reference

@transponderings

Thank you so much! ๐Ÿ‘

Definitely boosting.

Thank you for this, we were in need of an updated overview for the iOS apps and this is absolutely great and in depth. I unfortunately agree with you on Fedi, I started using it for Pleroma because itโ€™s the only one that retain the custom UI for some instances..but even with that, the app feels buggy a lot (laggy scrolling, buggy media players, and inconsistent notifications) that I am not sure if I can keep using it (I didnโ€™t even know about their recommendations..).
@transponderings Thatโ€™s a great article! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Metatext by @metabolist is the best Mastodon app at the moment. Unfortunately, you wonโ€™t see new features there anymore, maybe bug fixes. Thatโ€™s a shame, as Mastodonโ€™s official app still needs some time to improve, especially around memory consumption and how it manages the timeline.
@transponderings and just a reminder. If anyone wants to support the official app development: https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

@transponderings @bazbt3 Iโ€™ve tried all the same apps as well and come to basically the same kind of conclusion, none are 100% what I want but Toot! is fun and works better than the rest. Good article. Thanks.
@transponderings @Ronnie I skipped to the tl;dr but felt guilty and read it all. After trying all the apps updated in the last year-ish I too decided on Toot! - and don't think it's confirmation bias after spending the money either. Thanks too.
@transponderings read it, great research!!!
@transponderings Great read! Mastodon also works extremely well as a PWA using the iOS โ€˜add to Home Screen โ€™ functionality for those who donโ€™t want to install anything.

PWA = progressive web app

(For anyone else who hadnโ€™t come across that term)

@fossfreelancer @transponderings Although sadly, PWAs on iPhones are very restrictive or no existing compared to Android phones. Thank Apple for that.
@transponderings Nothing can beat the web version of Mastodon.
@transponderings Great article!
I tried the Mastodon app for a few minutes and it has so many drawbacks that it's unusable
I started using Metatext right after that and I'm so happy with it (especially now when emoji margin in profile names has been fixed). It has a few little issues, the most annoying one are delayed notifications, but I can live with that.
FYI Metatext shows when the person is following you (it was mentioned in the Profile information section).
@transponderings I like Metatext a lot, but it seems to be in maintenance mode, so presumably it wonโ€™t be picking up new Mastodon features as theyโ€™re introduced. Like you said, though, switching is easy!

@transponderings great job! Being able to look at some things like preferences logged-out can be useful though? Otherwise feel like it's being opaque unless i give it credentials to an account..

I like being able to read/draft posts offline. (Tusky is ok, but not perfect, on this, it already has a microsoft-github issue on this)

@jasper Perhaps, yes

I just felt that putting settings up-front could be a bit overwhelming for the new user โ€“ and I imagine most people would want to try out-of-the-box experience first before tweaking it

Yes, reading and drafting posts offline would be useful sometimes โ€“ itโ€™s not something Iโ€™d considered

@transponderings That was a long read! I feel like the first-time Mastodon experience was glossed over a little. I think that's where our official app really sets itself apart from the competition.

@Gargron Yes, I did like the initial setup in the official app, and there are things I glossed over there

However, I had to gloss over things just about everywhere or the post would have been even longer! And I felt it was more important to say what the apps were like in day-to-day use rather than just on day one

Thanks for reading it!

@Gargron @transponderings The only thing holding me back from using the official app is the lack of a federated feed.
@transponderings Will check this out later! :)

@transponderings thank you for putting so much work into this but i feel the need to give you a little helpful criticismโ€”this format is very inaccessible to many different types of disabled people because it doesnโ€™t conclusively compare the apps to one another in an easy to find and understand kind of way. this is a very long essay and probably the incorrect format to approach this type of information communication

@dexiheart Thank you. I know itโ€™s long โ€“ itโ€™s the longest single bit of writing Iโ€™ve ever written โ€“ and I know itโ€™s not the most accessible

But, as a disabled person myself, who would probably wish for a more black-and-white way of comparing the apps, I simply found that I didnโ€™t have the spoons or executive function to condense things โ€“ and itโ€™s probably the first time Iโ€™ve ever written a review of anything, so I didnโ€™t start it the way Iโ€™d start it now

Sorry my post doesnโ€™t meet your needs

@transponderings its okay! Itโ€™s more from an organization standpoint but itโ€™s something that i struggled with for a long time
@transponderings do you plan doing one of these for android apps too? Thank you for your work!

@honiden I donโ€™t own an Android phone, so Iโ€™m afraid not

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

@transponderings Impressive review. Thanks for doing this! Also ๐Ÿ’“ Toot! :)
@transponderings excellent takes on the iOS options for using mastodon. Thanks!!
@transponderings @Kaya thanks for the awesome review! I just switched to Toot! From the official Mastadon app.
@transponderings thank you!!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

@transponderings I can not stress enough how important it is to have a solid and enjoyable iOS / Android app for Mastodon.

Thank you so much for this great summary!

@transponderings yoooo, thank you for this, i will be reading. currently using tootle and it's alright but i'm guessing there are better options out there.
@transponderings yeah!   you also "got 'em all"!
@transponderings not sure if it was mentioned, but Mast was sold by the original developer to the current owner in 2020 who seem to be some holding company, so tracking is assumed
@django Interesting. Thank you for letting me know

@transponderings wow, that is quite a review! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I've used Tusky (on Android) which is pretty decent, but I don't use phones much anyway ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

I've tried a couple of desktop apps and the web interface is still way better, but it's good we have so many iOS apps that can at least somewhat hit the mark ๐Ÿน

@transponderings it was a bit of a shock to hear about the dismal accessibility performance of the apps as well as the web version itself! ๐Ÿ˜ž

The Mastodon community generally seems very aware of accessibility issues (especially here on scholar.social), to the extent of encouraging or even enforcing alt-text for example. So it's sad that the interface itself doesn't meet those same standards ๐Ÿ˜•

@badri Iโ€™ve been informed by someone else (who uses a screenreader) that they may be more accessible than I suggested. Just need to do a little more research and update the post
@transponderings oh okay, that's good to hear! Let me know when you find out more ๐Ÿ˜Œ
@transponderings Thanks for this post, very useful for a someone new to Mastodon. Iโ€™ll try Metatext and Toot!, mainly because of the gap-in-timeline-indication.
@transponderings do you know if any of the apps sync over multiple devices?
@Elinbloem Iโ€™m not aware of this โ€“ it seems unlikely (but would be useful, I agree)

@transponderings great article!

Even though I haven't used as many apps as you have, I've also come to the conclusion that Toot! is the most fun while Mast is broken but has tons of neat features :D

One thing I would clarify though: the search function should only search toots that have the searched hashtag, you've liked, boosted or posted yourself in all apps, even if they don't communicate that.
That's simply how the search function in mastodon is built, which is both great for privacy and bad for finding stuff.
