Is boosting a like or a retweet? Or am I asking the wrong questions?
@bryanl sorry I meant it's like retweet, the question was right!

@bryanl
Boost = RT

Favourite = a like, but as there's no algorithm this doesn't increase the visibility of the toot.

@bryanl My understanding (which is very limited), the like/boost is not a 1:1 mapping to twitter/fb because there is no algo deciding what to push to people. So boosting liberally is key to make the platform content flow. I'm not sure liking even has a function beyond simply indicating you 'approve' of something.
@SignalsAndSorcery @bryanl I’m new here too so what you’re saying it’s just some feedback to the original poster? If so that’s super cool! I hate “The algorithms” just because I liked something doesn’t mean I want a wall of content around it.

@bryanl Boost = retweet

Favourite just tells the poster you like it. Unlike like over there it doesn't do anything else.

Also remember hashtags are searchable, but not the text

@peter I remember when "like" didn't do anything on Twitter except tell people you liked the tweet also. There was quite a bit of grumbling when "<person you follow> liked" posts began to appear on the timeline.

We're just back to things working the way they used to on Twitter, and the way people keep wanting them to. :)

@bryanl

Definitely seems to be more in line with a retweet

@bryanl Yep pretty much! Main difference is you can only do the equivalent of a normal RT and you can't quote the post, by design.
@bryanl yep, like a retweet. Unrelated, I want that Zonda in your header.
@bryanl Boosting is a retweet; favoriting is a like.
@bryanl that is my understanding
@bryanl Yes, boost = retweet, favorite = like. Otherwise it's very similar to bird app :P

@bryanl It is more-or-less like that.

Though, I’d approach Fediverse like Golang: Reset all your paradigms and preconceived notions :)

For example, there is no “quote toot” and when you ask why, you might get a history lecture :D.

@bryanl - I believe so. But not 100% sure of the mechcanics of it, and if it is the exact same thing or not.
@bryanl boosting is a retweet, favourite is a like (sorta, it's also like a bookmark, but there are also bookmarks...)

@bryanl

Boost == retweet
Fave == like

@bryanl is boosting the star icon?

@bryanl @stevelatta it’s less clear depending on your Ui (web client/app etc).

Boost has an icon like Twitter’s “Retweet” 🔁 and behaves similarly (as noted in prior replies).

Favorite has a ⭐️ star or ❤️ heart icon and behaves like a “Like”

There are also bookmarks available but sometimes they’re a bit more buried.

fave = acknowledge/like
boost = like/so much I'm retweeting it

@bryanl

@bryanl Boosting most closely aligns with "retweets" which expose content to a broader network.

"Favourites" are not quite "Likes" insofar that they're not broadcasted. The toot you're liking can see that you liked it, but there's not a "ratio" or public leaderboard of likes here 😄

@bryanl Boosting is a retweet. Favoriting is a like.

@bryanl Retweet. Also worth mentioning: Favouring does not do anything for the post's visibility - it only shows the original poster that you liked what they wrote. There's no algorithm boosting posts with many likes/favourites.

(and now I'm wondering how many other people have already said the above but it hasn't reached my server yet. 😂 )

@bryanl yes it's like retweet or reblog or share. try following the #feditips tag. I'm still trying to figure it all out too.

@bryanl

The ⭐ (Favorite) is to respond to the author. You like what they said, kind of thing. But unlike Twitter, it does not cause the post to show more often or be seen by more ppl

The circular arrows (Boost) is one of only two ways for your post to be shown to more people than your own followers. The other is by using HASHTAGS.
