March: Elon Musk reaches out to The Babylon Bee and makes what is apparently the first reference to buying Twitter, then posts a poll asking if Twitter "rigorously adheres" to the principles of free speech.

October: The Babylon Bee files an amicus brief with SCOTUS arguing "parody shouldn’t be stripped of constitutional protection just because it’s not clearly labeled as parody."

November: Musk bans parody on Twitter unless clearly labeled. 🙃

@maxkennerly This. Such a, I've said he has revenge syndrome, he and tfg.
@maxkennerly as I blocked him long ago, I have to ask - has he clearly labelled his own account as parody? I mean, really...
@maxkennerly RIGHT? So by his new rules (LMAO), “libs of TikTok” should NOT be verified & banned
@maxkennerly And immediately bans several clearly labelled parodies of himself.
@maxkennerly but this was specifically in relation to impersonation, not parody in general. Big difference.

@dixongexpat I think you see some sort of bright line between "impersonation" and "parody" when it's really a big gray continuum with a lot of subjective judgments.

And the "impersonation" in question--funny tweets labeled Elon Musk but with a handle that clearly isn't his--falls on the parody side, not the impersonation side.

@maxkennerly Also relevant that Musk was triggered by the fact that Babylon Bee was suspended for misgendering a trans woman. As many others have been noting throughout the process - one of his main motivators from the start has been his extreme transphobia.
@maxkennerly in MusKGalaxy, there is no parody when firing 3,700 employees because of greed and Silicon Valley ego.

@maxkennerly Beware the Ideas of March

@maxkennerly LegalEagle on YouTube reported on the Onion's brief on the same subject. Highly entertaining!
