In Mastodon, hashtags have a slightly different role. Here, at least in current vers of Mast, search across other instances/srvrs is only possible for user names or hashtags.

Search for plain terms in convo not possible - for good safety reasons. Hence, hashtags are oft more important here, as long we don't excessively proliferate them.
