If you like it, favourite it. If you want to share it, boost it. If you like something *and* want to share it, do both. Don’t ignore the importance of social gestures of affirmation and support. Those things matter to people. It lets them know they are appreciated!
@djnavarro I want to but I still haven't figured out how to check if an image I see and like has alt-text 🤕
@mariemarm I think you can check on the web interface just by hovering the mouse over the image: if the image has alt-text it should show up as a tooltip, like in the image attached
@djnavarro oh thanks for showing me how on the web! I'm on the Android app and still can't figure out how to check it here lol So I just need stronger inhibitions when on app? 🙈
@mariemarm
If "the app on android" is #Fedilab, when you open the image you can tap it and the alt text will appear.
@djnavarro
@ami @djnavarro I tried that but I'm on the tech.lgbt app and it still doesn't seem to work? Sorry for not being clear 🙈
@mariemarm
tech.lgbt uses mastodon 3.5.3, so you should be able to see the alt text by clicking the image to see it and then hovering. If you are on mobile I don't know how to get the alt text to appear, sorry 😔
@djnavarro
@ami oh I got it now! I need to tap and hold to see the alt text! I was only tapping lightly before 😂 Thanks for your patience with me! 🤭🙈 @djnavarro
@mariemarm @djnavarro works in the Tusky Android app by just touching the image. Alt text should show up at the bottom of the screen if there is any. For example:
@mariemarm @djnavarro on tusky the alt text is shown when you click on an image
@mariemarm @djnavarro Tusky android app shows the image description if you click on the image to open it fullscreen as text view
@mariemarm @djnavarro The official Mastodon app is pretty rubbish tbh. I'm using Tusky, which displays alt text easily and generally works better at everything than the official app
@djnavarro liked, boosted, and thanked 🫡
@djnavarro thanks for the tips Danielle! Looking forward to learning more about this community
@djnavarro I haven’t even worked out which is the symbol for ‘boost’- does that mean share as in ‘retweet’?
@KateCushing Yep! “Boost” is the mastodon version of “retweet” on twitter. It’s the one that looks a bit like the 🔁 emoji 🙂
@djnavarro And does it just go to my followers or if you hashtag a topic- would it go there?
@KateCushing hm that’s a good question! I think (but am not certain) that it just goes to your followers? The post will appear in the feed for that hashtag because the original poster tagged it. But I don’t think the boost causes it to reappear in the hashtag feed a second time?
@djnavarro @vadane Does Favorites works like Likes? This point is unclear to me. I don’t see in my timeline what people that I follow do like, only what they boost.
@juliensalort @vadane Yes, that’s right. Favourites don’t have an algorithmic purpose, only a social purpose. They’re a way to say “thank you!” to the poster, that’s all. But that’s such an important thing to do in a community. It matters for helping people know they are valued!
@djnavarro I love this and you're totally right! Mastodon is such a cool and welcoming place.
@djnavarro thank you ! 🙏🏻

@djnavarro

This from dj should help the wonderful @stephenfry

@djnavarro those of us who are part of the great migration are slowly finding our way.
@djnavarro I want very much to boost posts, but am afraid to due to the lack of CWs. The culture here seems very against sharing anything that isn’t rainbows and kittens without a CW. I’m complying with that on my own toots, but how do I reblog others who are not?
@djnavarro As a habitual frequent liker I endorse this post (and I liked it too)
