The server your on isn't such a big deal. Moving to a different server/instance could help to make your local and federated timelines more relevant though (of if you want to follow instances that are blocked by the server your on).
Moving is not that difficult, see:
@mollyjongfast you can’t move your posts, but if you want to move to a new server, just pick it and create an account there.
then export your data (follows, mutes, etc.) from the old server.
finally tell your old account to point at the new account.
@jlindborg @mollyjongfast Yep, anyone can do it with some technical knowledge. There's a lot of "free speech" servers which are largely unmoderated but it's easy enough to yeet them into the sun.
@daezer @mollyjongfast Click on my name and you'll see a follow button. If your know their full username (e.g. @[email protected]) you can search for that, or you can try searching for just "@john" if you don't know the server.
Mastodon makes heavy use of hashtags so that's a good way to find new people to follow, and the Federated timeline is posts from people on other servers.
Posts from anyone you follow will show on your feed no matter which server they're on.

I did this last night, from social to fosstodon.org ( I do open source software so, that looks like a place :))
With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.
@mollyjongfast I feel you
(and I am even the admin of my own server)
