@jwyg
I hope owning a personal domain will become the new standard on verifying identity.
Paying for a domain and having it verified on the Fediverse like e.g. Mastodon does already would still be _much_ cheaper than buying a blue badge on Twitter. (Not that the mentioned "identity verification" on Mastodon would require payment at all though.)

Additional bonus: Buying a domain can often be done together with buying webspace one owns, which might spawn a renaissance for people to get their own "corner on the internet".
Such a step would require the process to be simpler and more user-friendly. But I think the internet and the economy around that is at a point where can easily cater such demand, if there is any.

@jwyg Money has been tight recently, so I made a one-off donation to the admin of another instance where I have an account. You won't be able to do that on That Other Site or you'll lose your blue checkmark, your edit button, maybe your soul...
Ideally I'd sign up for a recurring contribution, but the world isn't ideal. Here I have flexibility; there I won't. (And I never wanted a blue checkmark anyway.)
