The Atari 2600 at 45: The Console That Brought Arcade Games Home https://www.pcmag.com/opinions/atari-2600-console-brought-arcade-games-home (ICYMI, from September)
@jlendino That is a retro thing of beauty
@jlendino such a good looking console! Wouldn’t it be a thing if they built them like that nowadays?
@ecomba I would love this! But alas, we're now doomed to always-online Internet DRM, downloadable software patches, and loot boxes 😂
@jlendino I’ve seen people refurbishing old consoles before. Basically they take the shell of the device and put in a raspberry pi inside. I’ve always wanted to do something like that, but lacked the time and drive to do it! 🤷🏽‍♂️

@jlendino
I always wanted one of these. And almost bought one with a ton of games in the late 80s when they were on massive clearance at a toy shop.

But instead, as a kid I had a Magnavox Odyssey 2. There were some games that I absolutely loved like #Monkeyshines, #ShowdownIn2100AD, and a cool space dogfighting game. Not to mention the infamous #KCMunchkin!

@jlendino
I had to find the name of the space game. It was #CosmicConflict (1978). Looking back, it's incredibly basic. But at the time, as a kid, I honestly felt like I was in the cockpit of a space fighter. The HUD was just like what #Luke saw in the attack on the #DeathStar in #StarWars.
@mondegreen Thanks for the tips--and that game looks great. Reminds me a bit of Star Raiders for the Atari 400 and 800 (and later, 2600). Similar cockpit HUD motif.
