For newer people complaining about this or that not working/being too slow:

The admin pays for the privilege of hosting your account, for the server, for the bandwidth, in addition to donating their time to run it. There is no giant corporation behind the scenes making a profit off of your activity here.

Additionally there has been a mass sign-up event that no one expected or prepared for.

Perhaps have a little patience & grace and/or throw some funds in @stux direction to help manage it all.

@mrbitterness @stux also, in the spirit of federation, check out other instances too. Rather than flocking to one instance, spread out and find others. It's also not just #Mastodon . There's #Pleroma , #Misskey and many other platforms that all communicate with each other. Explore! On the Fediverse, we HAVE a choice!

In the Global timeline youll find mostly toots from people on other instances ​​

@SnoopyCanada @mrbitterness @stux well, for instance (pun intended), I am on the blob.cat instance.
You can find other instances by looking at the "Known Network" tab, where you get a feed of all the posts made on the fediverse that mstdn.social knows of, you can interact with people and notice which instance they come from (like now) or, as a last resort, you could look up lists of instances online.
When you follow people, you get in your timeline the posts they make and the posts they boost. People boost posts from other instances and you could explore them that way.

Different instances have different features, for example - higher character limit on posts, different rules, different user interface (or an option of many different user interfaces) and so on.
You have a lot of choice.

There is a bot that I came across that had statistics on how many instances there are and it was something like 1000 different instances.
