If you're putting content on FunkWhale, bear in mind that channels can be followed from Mastodon etc but accounts cannot be.

So, if you want people to follow your FunkWhale content from elsewhere on the Fediverse, it's your FunkWhale channel address(es) that you want to advertise.

To make clear:

-Following a FunkWhale channel works fine, just as expected. You can paste the address into Mastodon etc and click follow.

-Trying to follow a FunkWhale account from Mastodon etc doesn't work, it just brings up a "follow request" message that is never resolved.

(For any developers out there who would be interested in fixing this bug, there's an open issue about it at https://dev.funkwhale.audio/funkwhale/funkwhale/-/issues/1315)

@feditips i've never seen the inside of funkwhale but based on the description of the problem..
perhaps they could just implement a kind of "default" channel?

@logan

Yeah, one workaround is to put all your content on one channel and tell people that channel's address as if it was your account.

However, some people have multiple channels under a single account, and if someone tries to follow the account (so they can follow all the channels and any future channels) they won't see any updates at all.

It's a bit of a mess really, the account addresses are misleading while this bug exists.

@feditips not necessarily having to put everything on 1 channel. this choose default channel would however be the only one that the outside viewers would see if they followed the account address.

it would resolve the request not being filled but of course it'll still have problems of it's own.

@logan

Ah, I see what you mean... It would help get them following at least something, yes. Could cause confusion when they don't see updates from the other channels of that account though?

It's just kind of weird to have two tiers of addresses when the top tier doesn't work.

@feditips is it a bug? Or a feature. Mobilizon doesn't allow to follow accounts neither, but groups.

@tommy

I'm pretty sure it is a bug?

Seems odd to display an account address if there is no way to follow it.

@feditips depends, you want accounts tobe able to follow channels, so I guess you need to reveal the account via AP/make it discoverable, to have an inbox and/or outbox.

But it might make no sense from a software design perspective to follow accounts, since channels publish content.

@tommy

Why publish the account address on a profile page though, if there's nothing that others users can do with that address? (Genuine question, not being snarky!)

@feditips ok, I do not get what is meant by account address on profile page. Is the somethin in the funkwhale web-interface that displays somewhere the accout like @[email protected] ?

@tommy

If you go to an account page on Funkwhale, there's a Fediverse address listed (the same way there is on Mastodon etc).

This is what cannot currently be followed, though the channel's address can be.
