@nev PocketBooks are pretty good. They show up as normal storage device when you connect them via USB and some have a µSD card slot.
PDFs are usually not a great experience on e-reader, unless you get one with a big display.
@nev Seconding the Kobo recs. When I first bought them in the US they had to be shipped to me from Canada, though now they are available in WalMart stores thanks to their Rakuten partnership.
They are not too dissimilar from the Kindle, but I like the features and software better
@nev I have a Tolino (Germany). It is competently enough with PDF, but sometimes a bit slow. The PDF renderer has been improved recently, now even scientific papers are readable well enough on the thing.
Mine cost about 90ish euros here but it was refurbished one.
@nev I have both a Kobo and a Pocketbook. The Kobo is an old model which I got when they discontinued it from the UK, and it works well - it was 10 euros. If you can find an older model, they'll work fine.
I don't know about newer models, because they cost too much here, and run Android, which I'm not interested in for a reader. No large conglomerate has any reason to know what I'm doing, and they can bite me if they expect me to just give them that info.
The pocketbook runs Linux, and works great for pdf and epub.
(I also have a pinenote, which has an android thing on it at the moment, as the pinenote is in development mode. However it is quite nice and was less expensive than the pocketbook. It also has a pen, so it's not what you asked for directly. Still, keep an eye on that space if you're looking for something a bit larger which does a bit more but is still inexpensive - but not NOW as "not a book reader exactly")
Here's a few suggestions that are supposed to be good
