I discovered an ad-blocking DNS server today.

Alternate DNS
https://alternate-dns.com

This is an easier alternative to setting up a Pi-Hole in your network. It is able to block most ads on web pages.

It wasn't able to block video ads in the YouTube app for Android TV, so I might consider setting up a Pi-Hole after all. It was able to block the banner ad in the homepage though.

Alternate DNS - Ad Blocking DNS Server

@njoseph
My coworker has a pi-hole and it didm' block youtube video ads either.

Btw. What's the advantage of DNS-level blocking compared to browser addons like ublock origin?

@wolf480pl DNS based ad-blocking is for all the other devices where you wouldn't use browsers, like Android TVs which I mentioned above.

Also, it's useful for other devices on the network which don't have ad-blockers installed on the device.

VPN-based ad-blockers on Android (AdAway, Blokada) seem to be draining a lot of battery these days, or maybe my phone is too old now. 🤔

@wolf480pl @njoseph For me the main advantage for me of DNS-based ad blocking is that it works for things other than web browsers. Stopping elderly relatives being exposed to Microsoft Solitaire's very noisy video ads every day, for example.
@njoseph Does it support opennic?
@njoseph Very cool that this exists. I wish I had a clearer idea who they are; I'm hesitant to route all of my Internet traffic through someone I don't know anything about.
@njoseph As another comment mentions, YouTube ads can't be blocked with pihole. YouTube serves ad and videos from the same domain, thus preventing ad blocking.
