My first PC was a pass-me-down gift from my aunt and it was just Norton Commander with a bunch of games pre-installed on it, I don't even know what OS it was because at the time I thought Norton Commander was the OS.
Making another version of this poll where the answers are "I'm old", "I'm a millenial" and "I'm baby"

@Gargron Windows XP for me, because I can practically do anything with it. LOLs.
@Gargron I picked 7, but 3.11 is a close second - it was oddly adorable. I think it's the pixel art.
@polychrome @Gargron The pixel art in the Windows 3.X series was done by Susan Kare, a legend in early icon design. She also did the early Macintosh pixel art.
@Gargron No love for Windows 2000? I heard it was one of the more stable Windows versions ever made...
@Gargron none. Linux is better. 😂
@OutsmartBigBrother @Gargron Then which Windows sucked the least 🙃
@Gargron Windows 2000, by a long shot. 95 wasn't bad either. Millenium by far the worst.
@Gargron Very very hard decision. XP often is refereed to as the best Windows ever but i honestly had my best experience with Windows 7. So sorry XP Gang but i choose 7.
@Gargron I voted for 7 because it was the last one before the UI got ruined by the existence of touchscreen laptops and before the UX and stability got ruined by the abuse of the now-standard always-on internet connection. But XP was also good.
@Gargron can't say much about 95/98 because I've never used them enough as a real OS, was too little and only ran games on them. Can't say much about 8/8.1/10 because I switched to Mac by the time they came out. But I do use 10 on a VM occasionally to build or test something, it sure feels like a regression from 7. And 8 with its gigantic controls and no start menu is just meh.
@Gargron unironically 8.1

@schmorp @Gargron Me too, it improved on 7 but walked back some of the mistakes from 8.

10 is just trying too hard to be its own new thing, constantly changing settings/control panel functionality and still wildly inconsistent UI. I work with mostly Windows 10 computers at work, but my own work computer will be staying with 8.1 as long as I can get away with it.

@Gargron Easily 98 (SE) or XP, but hard to decide which...
@Gargron XP man without a doubt
@Gargron I preferred 98 - Dos worked a lot better and was easier customisable for older / legacy programmes.
@Gargron I had installed windows 7 maybe for longest. But windows 10 isn't that bad as many says. I think it is best from Windows 7 era. YES it has some bugs, but which operating system doesn't have them?
@Gargron XP, because it is what convinced me to switch to Linux.
@Gargron My first was Windows 3.1, so I'm already feeling pretty old.
@malin @Gargron Oh, FML. I voted for 98 (actually 98SE) because I completely forgot Windows 3.1. I spent much more of my time on the DOS 5.0 side of that machine. XD

@bluestarultor @malin @Gargron DOS was clearly the best part of 3.x

@polychrome It was where all the games were!

Although I discovered some of them could actually be run from either side. IIRC Castle of the Winds 2 was one of them. But mostly I only remember Windows having Solitaire and MS Paintbrush.

@malin @Gargron Windows 3.1 here as well. I heard they are getting me a nursing home room soon.
@Gargron exactly! I had a text processor called "NEWS" preinsalled. And a game called Sokoban 😂
@Gargron my first one i got had XP on it, but in School, around 2003, we still had to use 95. I customized the sh*t out of XP, and it was unstable AF 😅
@Gargron
I used Qfiler instead of Norton Commander. Worked with MS Dos 3.x
@Gargron first one I really remember was 286.
@Gargron my first was the family windows 95 compaq, I think it was Chips Challenge that was the first game I ever got hooked on

@Gargron Mine was a 286 which I got given in parts and a set of discs with DOS and Windows 3.1.

It took me a further six months before I got a mouse, so I've always been good at finding the shortcut keys!
