This is a long shot, but I want to put the power of social media and federation to the test.

My son wants to become a commercial airline pilot when he’s grown up. It would be awesome if we could find a commercial pilot in the fediverse that we can follow and ask questions of.

If everyone who reads this could boost it, it would be much appreciated and it would mean the world to my son if he could get in touch with a real-life commercial pilot! ✈️

@alan

Surely there are some Usenet groups about aviation, even if I'm not aware of them (and, alas, not a lot of people uses Usenet anymore).

Perhaps a starting point, better than nothing, could be the aviation section of Stackexchange:

@GustavinoBevilacqua My son has done a ton of research online but I’ll point him in the direction of the link you posted- thank you.
It would be cool if he can actually chat with some pilots- he’d absolutely love it.
@alan ich vermute @fly_it und @sophie können entweder direkt oder per Empfehlungen helfen 😉

@xpac
Hi @alan,
I have been working as an airline pilot on Boeing 737 and today on the A320 family. You can follow me or this instance if you like. At least I might be able to offer a european perspective on schools and the job situation.

Feel free to ask anything, I will be happy to help.

@alan
I believe @grumpy_copilot and @0 should have experience on the topic, too.
@fly_it Thanks for getting in touch! My son (@mattt) will be over the moon if he can chat to and ask a real FO about flying those planes!
No doubt you’ll be bombarded with toots from him very soon!

@xpac @fly_it

Hello @alan ,
I am not (yet) a professional pilot, but grew up on small airfields. So I can help with the first steps into a glider of the local flying clubs. This is easier than you think and already possible at the age of 14 (in Germany).

You are welcome to follow me here. If there is any question, don't hestitate to ask me.

@sophie Thanks for replying, Sophie.
My son has already done a ton of research on flying and knows that the way to start is via the Air Cadets (here in the UK) when he’s 15. I’ll get him to follow you (@Matt) as I’m sure he’d love to know about your experience of growing up on small airfields.
Were/are your parents in the Armed Forces?

@alan @Matt

My grandfather was a passionate glider pilot and later in his life he added the Light Sports Aircraft class on top.

After finishing my studies I joined my local flying club and am currently training for the PPL(A) license. the plan is to extend this afterwards to a CPL(A) and start the flight instructor training.

@sophie So what plane do you fly in training? A cessna?

@Matt

I fly multiple planes.

Diamond HK36 & DA20
Maule MX-7
Arcus M
DG-1000T
Grob G 103

So it's a mix of multiple aircrafts. SEPs and Gliders

The picture was taken on board of a DA20, 5 minutes after departure in the climb phase.

@alan @fly_it @sophie I'm obviously context switching too much. That toot was supposed to be in English :D
@alan pinging @chris and @pandora_parrot for suggestions

@david Thanks for the suggestions!

Someone else already suggested Chris but not Pandora Parrot 👍🏻

@alan Maybe @sophie?
@kunsi Thanks for the suggestion- I’ve already been in touch with Sophie 👍🏻
@alan I highly recommend following and watching the videos made by this guy. Your son will learn a huge amount from this. And you can ask questions.

@alan In case you missed any, I've made a chart of the responses:

https://www.solipsys.co.uk/Chartodon/FlyingOnMastodon.svg

@ColinTheMathmo Wow- thanks! How did you do that? Was it an automated process?

@alan I wrote a tool a while ago. It's slow, and currently I trigger it by hand, but I'm looking at creating a robot that people can invoke via a toot and see how it goes.

I'd welcome your thoughts.

Click on any node to see the original toot.

@ColinTheMathmo That’s an interesting way to view a toot conversation- I’m not sure there’s anything I can suggest!

@alan if your son would like to learn about aviation safety, which (after enough raw info absorbed) shines a light on the fact that aerospace requires some of the most intense cooperation of any human activity, I would recommend checking avherald.com on a regular basis.

since it describes accidents, you may want to check the content first. but for me, aviation safety was a gateway to understanding much more about aviation, and how hard *many* people work to keep it safe.

@alan if you want to get an idea of the worst he might see, click reports with the red 'C'. it's not bad, all told, but you can decide what's age appropriate.

the cool thing about aviation accident reports is the *immense* effort taken to understand root causes, and the immense detail given in describing the process. you end up learning a ton of av stuff just the reports.

(also, he'll be required to read & understand particularly illustrative accidents during training)

@deutrino Thanks for the tip- I’ll have a look to se if any of it is suitable for my son 👍🏻

@alan there are also TONS of great videos on youtube.

of cool old airliners:

and some more in-depth flying

@alan Just saw your post. I’m a private pilot and an aerospace education officer for the Civil Air Patrol (meaning I teach kids about what your son is interested in). I’d be happy to help.
@bkoehn Thanks for your reply! I’m sure @Matt will have some questions for you..!
@alan i met a former commercial pilot turned air force. He was bored out of his skull with big slow sky busses, lousy hours, living out of a suitcase in hotels, low pay due to saturation (no shortage of pilots). The military paid even less, but the joy of flying fighter planes more than compensated.
@alan commercial piloting is not the high paying gig that it used to be. It sounds like he's not in it for the money, which is good, but if not for the money, wouldn't air force make more sense? Or if he's not an adreneline junky then i would still think crop dusting or fire fighting from the air would be more interesting.
@alan If he goes commercial, he'll generally be choosing Boeing or Airbus. Tell him if he chooses #Boeing, he will be at the receiving end of my boycott. Boeing is an #ALEC member, which puts it on the wrong side of ethics & politics. Plus Boeing seems to have the most safety issues of the duopoly.

@koherecoWatchdog Thanks for those insights. He’s definitively in it for the experience rather than the money!

I’ve tried to explain to him that it’s not all a bed of roses, but of course stuff online always shows the good stuff 😬
