Google is a "cornerstone sponsor" of FOSDEM this year, which is being run entirely on Matrix, accessible on Android via Element, which has just been pulled from Google's Play Store. FOSDEM is in a week. This all makes perfect sense.
They're going to have a heart attack when they find out what Google Search and Chrome will show you.

“Update: we just got a call from a Google VP who explained the suspension was triggered by a report of extremely abusive content accessible on the https://t.co/g01j4u6O2e server. Our trust & safety team had already acted on it, and the app should be reinstated shortly.”

#FOSDEM should stop taking money from #NoGoogle, as this allows Google to play the nice guy while actually destroying our society by surveillance.

Sponsoring as indulgence...
@mhoye Sometimes I feel like Google has two personalities. The open-source loving and good company Google and the proprietary, privacy invasive and anti-competitive Google.
@admin one of those personalities is clearly subservient to the other.

@mhoye The app was restored to the store a few hours ago after a VP at Google reached out to the Matrix people, and they addressed reports Google had about some problematic content on a Matrix network, apparently.

Take a look at the original post where they added an update: https://element.io/blog/element-on-google-play-store/

Element suspended on Google Play Store: now resolved.

Hi all, At 2021-01-29 at 21:35 UTC Google suspended Element from the Play Store without warning or notification.  We submitted an appeal asking for clarification at 23:18, and at 05:31 received a generic update from the Google Play Policy team citing that the app has been removed

@pauljacobson I heard! It’s good news.

Good for them to be able to "establish contact" and "establish a channel". Others, I'm sure, are not so lucky.
