Some folks don't like it when I ask others to DONATE to free and open source software. But just because something's free doesn't mean it doesn't have costs.
Let's look at what happens if we don't collectively step up to the plate and give:
1. We use social media for "free" -- giving away our data to corporations in the process, enabling surveillance capitalism
2. We pay a monthly fee for social media SaaS -- which is better than surveillance capitalism, but still leaves the service vulnerable to the whims VC-funded start-ups
3. The government funds social media -- which is fine if you really like your government and think it can do no wrong, but terrible if you have an oppressive government that will, again, use social media to silence and oppress you
Which leaves what, in my mind, is the best possible option: build, volunteer, and donate to social media projects that are free and open source -- available to anyone to use!
And again, not everyone can build, volunteer and fund -- but if this is in your means, do it!
