I was listening to CNBC and CNN on XM last night and good fucking grief Americans love the smell of their own shit. So many “we are the shining light of the world, the best democracy, what will the world do now?”

A lot of us will just keep living our free lives, you fucking assholes*.

(Them, not you, dear reader.)

@tewha The fact that so many people there actually believes that explains a lot about what is happening there.

@tewha You have free lives because America had nukes. And before that because we shot the English when nobody else would.

Someone must've done an alt-history of no American Revolution, but it'd be a bleak English bootheel world. Without us, there'd be only monarchies and dictatorships.

America's a fuckup country a lot of the time, like now, but we still do set the tone for the rest of the world, which is why the GOP administration years have been so bad.

@mdhughes @tewha The British Empire abolished slavery over 30 years before the US.

@alsoknownas @tewha The English abolished it because they wanted to hurt the Dutch economically, they never did anything for ethical reasons. And "abolished slavery" may come as some surprise to the Indians, who weren't free of the English until 1947.

The US is not a single monolithic place. The free states abolished slavery in 1794-1807, but the slave/Confederate states we had to shoot to make them stop 60 years later.

History books are a thing. You should read one.

@tewha yup, Ive been saying for years that nationalism is the first step to bring your country absolutely down, but I was always shunned.
No matter how bad your country will do, with nationalism you are save because hey you are the best, no matter what, isnt it?

I mean we had the same In Germany back then, no matter how terrible things were. "We are fine because we are proud[...]".
There are many other examples for today but dare to criticise the nationalism.

@tewha that last line applies to most of my posts

@tewha Maybe it's a case of deep down, they know they're not free, but if they say it enough, maybe they'll be able to convince themselves?

(all this "land of the free" gets on my goat too, but then I'm not American).

@tewha as a non-american, if I had to decide on a "shining light of the world" or the "best democracy" I'd point at New Zealand or somewhere Scandinavian

it's been like this as long as I remember
@izaya @tewha switzerland is also a choice
@jeder @tewha too militarised for my tastes, but I suppose it is
@izaya @jeder @tewha the swiss military have not much to say in politics. even if, in the end everything has to pass by the votes of the swiss citizens.

i do agree tho that swiss military thing sucks, not only in eating up budget, but also in forcing ppl into the army, just to do nothing at all.
@izaya @tewha name a single other country with freedom of speech
@fluffy @tewha now that you mention it, I can't think of any countries with true freedom of speech at all.
@izaya @tewha hm, i guess the usa has had some reform about that in the last decade or so.

times sure have changed. you get more freedom from places with loose policing these days than with protected speech.

@tewha Haha...

I'd like to admit to some irony here. I've been observing what's been going on in the States for just over a year now, and on and off even before that. I'm not American though. I don't even live in America.

I'm a Canadian watching horrible shit unfold and I just find it all so shameful.

The events of today also lead me to not want to use social media or at least not Twitter (I don't have Facebook).

@tewha just a couple days or so ago, i read from rami ismail (dutch/egyptian video game dev) that just now he realised when americans talk about freedom, a free society, rights, etc., more often than not they believe this ambition to be unique in the world – as if most other countries weren’t built on more or less the same general ideal, and weren’t about trying to realise that for their citizens.

that’s both a bit terrifying, and also explains a lot.

@tewha Things are so, so fucked right now. It's amazing how ignorant people are.

Every neoliberal out there is on nothing but a constant fucking ego trip, the Democrat-Republican rivalry is like if the Joker and the Penguin were constantly arguing over which one of them is the villain.

The left is a shadow of its former self and not even taken seriously anymore. We need to group together again and get shit fucking done like we used to.
