my guess is that a fully free software firmware for the pinephone modem if in the works, but I could very well be wrong here

LINux on MOBile@wisemonkey @PINE64 @postmarketOS IIRC, the #Librem5 uses m.2 for their modems. The Quectel EG-25G in the #PinePhone appears to big to fit on such a card:
