I know it's late, but it's Friday and with the #Ayodhyaverdict coming down tomorrow, let's do a quick round of questions.

Anything you want to know about the Ramayana -- Ask away. I'll answer the first 5 questions that come in. #history #MastodonThread #publichistory #Ramayana

@audreytruschke the sites oldest records are how much old?
@audreytruschke Where was Ram born? Ayodhya or Kurukshetra?

@DKhantastic Q: Where was Ram born, Ayodhya or Kurukshetra?

A: Speaking in strict historical terms, we have no evidence that Rama was a real historical person, so, neither. As a matter of modern Hindu religious belief, the standard answer is that Ram was born in Ayodhya.

@audreytruschke If I want to read a Sanskrit plus English transliteration of Valmiki Ramayana, which book should I look at? -Thanks; Also, secular commentary and fun facts.

@apveng Q: Best Sanskrit and English editions of Valmiki's Ramayana?

A: The Goldmans/Pollock translation of the critical edition of the Ramayana is the best literal English rendering. The Clay editions of book 1-5, I believe, have transliterated Sanskrit en face.

@audreytruschke Thank you. The Goldman/Pollock ones don't seem to be available in Kindle yet. May have to wait for that. The clay library is a real find. They seem to have a lot of Sanskrit works. (And there is kindle).
@audreytruschke was the story of shambuka ( who ram beheads for doing tapsya) present in valmiki ramayana ?

@iwanderer Q: Is the story of Shambuka present in Valmiki's Ramayana?

A: Yes, it is in the Uttarakanda, volume 7 (many of whose episodes are of relatively late origin). It was known by at least the 7th century since it appears in Bhavabhuti's Uttararamacarita (possibly earlier; I've have to check). The episode appeared to disturb numerous later commentaries who added elements designed to soften the beheading, such as adding an element of divine approval or showing Rama hesitating.

@audreytruschke thank you for the clarification.
@audreytruschke how many versions of Ramanaya are there? Or it has only one version?

@Spectatorkhan A: How many versions of the Ramayana exist?

A: Countless, and there are more all the time. It is a story always being retold. Even what we call Valmiki's Ramayana was a fluid text that existed in multiple versions.

AK Ramanujan began a famous essay on the Ramayana thus: "How many Ramayanas? Three hundred? Three thousand? At the end of some Ramayanas, a question is sometimes asked: How many Ramayans have there been? And there are stories that answer the question. Here is one."

@audreytruschke @Spectatorkhan Marathi poet Moropant (เคฎเฅ‹เคฐเฅ‹เคชเค‚เคค) alone pledged to write 108 Ramayanas but could complete only 95. The one Niroshth Ramayan is written such that it doesn't use any labial consonants. Mind that he is writing Ramayana and now try saying Ram without using your lips ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
@audreytruschke is there any proof that Babar actually destroyed a temple to build Babri masjid?
@audreytruschke isnt there some debate over the location of this birthplace called Ayodhya? has there been study or research about whether or not the present day ayodhya corresponds to the land mentioned in the myth.
