Bookmarking toots: Thanks to the brilliant tips by obscurosaur, I have tried & tested two methods:

1. Reply to the toot with a unique hashtag. Remove the id of the tooter. If you remove id, the tooter can see the reply if they check, but will not get notifications.

2.Reply to the toot & DM to yourself. Remove the id of the tooter. The tooter will not get your reply.

3. Bookmarking with Android:
To quote Prasanna Venkadesh @prashere
"I use an android app called Fedilab which gives you the option to bookmark posts locally on your device."

4.Bookmarking in browser:

To quote Adnan @ahalam
"use the browser bookmark feature? Or a notes app? Or if you use a messenger, message these links to yourself. Personally I use Pocket for saving links."

Check the two tweets in the thread, and also read waakfest's comments on bookmarking.

But none of this is a replacement for the bookmarking, hope someone develops that feature. That is the only thing I seriously miss from the Bird Site.

CC: for comments @Gargron @stux

@Shudraism @shirishag75 @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux just try signing up for an account on a glitch instance and you will have bookmarking
@liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux it's possible that Eugen only follows upstream which would make sense as it's the largest instance. So perhaps if upstream i.e. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon would have that feature in its roadmap (there probably is a PR somewhere) then we might get it as mastodon is updated . I have no idea atm as to how much time does Eugen wait before installing a stable update. Smaller instances may not have such issues and hence can roll out faster. 1/n

@liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux and perhaps even use experimental features etc. Will have to wait and see.
@shirishag75 @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux mastodon.social always runs the latest version. The feature of bookmarking was developed in a fork called Glitch-soc that many instances use. If you look on http://fediverse.network you can see many of them that are running Glitch. its listed in the version number column. Mastodon mainline decided against the PR and didnt want to have bookmarking. So if you want it you have to use a different fork.

@liaizon @shirishag75 @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

Are there any major issues with it?

@BhavanaVarun @liaizon @shirishag75 @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

Not sure you are referring to which iissues - As waakfest suggested I have signed up on Glitch fork, at Avoospace, my applcation is under review- will tell you how that works if they accept my request.

Refer this tweet, and Waakfest's other comments on my bookmarking thread for more clarity.

@liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux can you share the PR issue number so I can see the discussion of the same ?
@shirishag75 @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux I dont know the issue number off hand but you can surely search it in the mastodon github.

@shirishag75 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

Mastodon.social is the original instance, not the largest one.

The japanese pawoo.net has 100,000 more users than mastodon.social.

@gemlog @shirishag75 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux wow how so? Was there an exodus or just normal growth over time?

@bull500 @shirishag75 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

It just took off on its own. The next largest instance after mastodon.social is also Japanese. When the Japanese like something, the REALLY like it! Have you not met any Japanese? :-)

@gemlog @bull500 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

nice would have been nicer if it had server-end javascript, one could have analyzed lot more than just numbers and spot more trends and such. For e.g. which is the version which most instances are running at ? The uptime, it doesn't give any indication as to how the uptime is being indicated and so on and so forth. I'm sure somebody could make some interesting content and analysis from this table :)

@shirishag75 @bull500 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux

Poke around! That's the legacy one. I happen to like the sortable table.

Documentation and token for the API are in the menu at the very top of the page I linked.

@gemlog @shirishag75 @liaizon @Shudraism @obscurosaur @Gargron @stux wow that's incredible. Sadly no😪 would love to have friends from Japan someday

@bull500

I am fortunate enough to have a couple of japanese-born friends here in canada and know a couple of friends who went back to japan.
Of course, I also know people who look japanese and have japanese names, but they are canadians actually.

@Shudraism dm is like not one place so 1 will be better than 2. You open a new dm every time
@Deepsealioness I agree, 1 is better. 2 will be ok to begin with, then it will clutter the DMs.
@Shudraism the other trick is if you are using an instance that has the feature natively like https://awoo.space or any instance on https://fediverse.network/mastodon that says the word Glitch
Awoo Space

Awoo.space is a Mastodon instance where members can rely on a team of moderators to help resolve conflict, and limits federation with other instances using a specific access list to minimize abuse. While mature content is allowed here, we strongly believe in being able to choose to engage with content on your own terms, so please make sure to put mature and potentially sensitive content behind the CW feature with enough description that people know what it's about. Before signing up, please read our community guidelines. While it's a very broad swath of topics it covers, please do your best! We believe that as long as you're putting forth genuine effort to limit harm you might cause – even if you haven't read the document – you'll be okay!

@liaizon
Wait, are you saying some instances have the bookmark feature, and it is called "glitch"?

@Shudraism Yes! there are many different features you can get by using different versions of the software. So you are currently on the "Original" version of #Mastodon but there are a few other forks of it with different features. The biggest other fork (that has native bookmarking) is called Glitch-Soc (https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/) and one of the other large forks is @darius's #Hometown which I think also has bookmarking

Introduction | Mastodon Glitch Edition

@liaizon @darius

This is very helpful, thank you very much for the information.

#Bookmarks #Mastodon

@Shudraism no problem at all! Please feel free to reach out for any questions. I have been putting much time into trying to understand and promote the fediverse and want to be of service to the open web and the free flow of information
@Shudraism @darius wow bookmarks got merged into mainline! maybe because of this thread! should be coming to mastodon.social soon then!
@liaizon @darius
Yey!! 🙌
@obscurosaur this calls for a celebration.
@liaizon @Shudraism Hometown doesn't. What's the bookmarking feature?
@darius @Shudraism ahh I thought it was imported into hometown from from Glitch as well. it adds another button on each post that lets you bookmark it personally and not notify the op. its actually a really useful feature.
