Hi Fediverse

it seems to me that switching.social closed down it's services. All social media accounts are deleted and the site is currently offline.

Unfortunately, I have no clue what happened, I'm as surprised as you are. I already contacted the French, Italian and Turkish version of the site.

In case someone knows anything about what happened or has backups of one/multiple pages of the website, I would be very happy to get in touch with you.

#SwitchingSocial #offline
Once again here the link to the Wayback machine, where you can still visit the original site:

switching.social โ€“ Ethical alternatives to popular sites and apps

@swisode Nooooo... Unfortunately, not all pages have been archived. For example, https://web.archive.org/web/20190915101437/https://switching.social/ethical-alternatives-to-imgur-and-photobucket/ is missing (Ethical alternatives to imgur and photobucket). Does anyone have backups of the site? We need to restore this! It was the best link to give other, non-techy people to give them the option of at least a well-informed choice!
@swisode There's a snapshot of [email protected] on the wayback machine as well: http://web.archive.org/web/20190609132738/https://mastodon.at/@switchingsocial Works surprisingly well!

@LuKaRo I also found the latest posts on my instance as I followed the account. ๐Ÿ™‚ I sent you my mail address - would be happy to get the missing articles ๐ŸŽ‰
@swisode @MadestMadness this is why anonymous sites where the owner wants to remain hidden are extra risky..
@swisode twitter search shows they got into some discourses about the brave browser and then "disappeared"
@dashie @swisode could you please share links to these tweets?
switchingsocial - Twitter Suche

Am 17. Sept. hat @BrendanEich getwittert: โ€ž@SwitchingSocial @QwantCom @brave @Brave..โ€œ โ€“ lies, was andere zu sagen haben, und nimm an der Unterhaltung teil.

@Groosha
One of the last things mentioned on the Mastodon account was this:
"
Woo, I'm inadvertently having a bust up with Brendan Eich on Twitter.

He joined a thread I was in, I asked him why he sold part of Brave to Peter Thiel, Eich replied that he thinks Thiel cares about privacy:

twitter.com/BrendanEich/statusโ€ฆ

So... the head of Brave thinks Peter Thiel is pro-privacy :blobastonished:

#Brave #BrendanEich"

@dashie @swisode

@dashie @swisode @Groosha holy shit some of those comments on their. I forgot how nasty people are on Twitter
The rage. My God.
@dashie whoopsie, looks like being super ideological about which software to not recommend maybe got them in a little trouble............  #justsayin @swisode
@swisode ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข

If you finally know about the reasons, please let us know. Maybe they've just been successfully attacked.

This is so sadโ€ฆ
@josealberto4444 Of course I will do - let's hope for the best.
@swisode WTF?!SwitchingSocial was very active,even some days ago.I totally can't understand that they're gone now.It was such a important site to spread more knowledge about free and open services.Is it possible that they've been hacked and will bring everything back online soon?If not,we should copy the Web Archive pages and bring them to a own domain where updates are possible and continue SwitchingSocials work...
@nipos I also considered this scenario, so I would wait a few days for a sign, message or something. I also downloaded all sites available on the Wayback machine ... as a backup of the backup.

I hope this situation will clear up soon and that the author is OK.
@swisode I just read the answers to your German post and the fact that the account has been deleted just after answering a post makes me feel like it really wasn't intended by the author.Additionally I strongly believe that they had sent a shutdown notice publicly if this was really done on purpose.
@nipos @swisode I think, if needed, a good idea would be to host its eventual replacement as a git repo (in a gitlab instance?). Maybe as a wiki too? ๐Ÿค”
@andycuccaro @swisode Hosting the site as a Git repository is a very good idea.I would have done that anyway.But I'm not a big fan of Gitlab.It's so bloated and not very intuitive.As long as it's not Google GitLab.com,I could live with it but I prefer Gogs or Gitea.I have my own projects on https://notabug.org which is a Gogs instance and I really like it.
ERROR! :( NotABug.org: Free code hosting

@swisode I can access latest post by their mastodon account via tusky. Last discussions were 2 days ago about OSM and a friendly map service, but 3 days ago they were talking about the discussion in Twitter with Brendan Eich. If you want screenshots or anything, just let me know.

@swisode Their Friendica account is till up, if deprecated, but the links to the active social media accounts (Mastodon and Diaspora) seem to go no where.
Wasn't Sean (deadsuperhero) behind switching.social?
@swisode I'm happy to host a mirror somewhere if there's an open collaborative effort to get things back up. Please let me know!

@swisode Just for your interest, the mastodon.at admin confirmed that the account was deleted without any third-party involved.

https://mastodon.at/@pfigel/102820215797624179

Whatever happened, I guess it was their decision to stop providing switching.social.

๐Ÿคท Time to move on and rework the knowledge.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] based on the available data it looks like the account was deleted by the owner, with no obvious signs of foul play. I have no knowledge as to what motivated that action. Happy to assist the account owner with data recovery should the deletion not have been intentional or initiated by a third party.

NO! They were one of my favorites on the network ๐Ÿ˜ข

@swisode
There's something on archive.org...
@swisode Wanted to use @[email protected] for the very first time now. I thought: maybe it's not their URL, so I looked here. Mastodon Account empty as well, must be a fake account. And then I saw your post. Wow, that's a suprise! Hope they come back soon...
@swisode Whoa, that sucks! I loved that site! Please let us know if you find out what happened.
@swisode O no, that's terrible news! I hope they are alright. Loved the site/service, got so many good recommendations from it ...
@swisode
It might be useful for those who would read this thread: an archive of their website is available here:
