Thought to make for a stronger #Coati Monday by sharing some of my commissions or other art. Here's my newest, a picture from Thomas K Dye of http://newshounds.keenspot.com who was offering cartoony commissions. I've not been a cartoon, somehow, but a makeover in Early Hanna-Barbera style seemed like fun, and it turned out to be so. It's weird for me to stand on two feet, but that is the Early H-B style, especially for a title card, so I should stretch some.

Thomas Dye's Comics - Newshounds - Infinity Refugees - Thursday, August 29, 2024

The story of dogs, cats, and rats finding a place in human-created world of TV news, old sitcoms, new conspiracies, crazed science, and intense personal drama.

For #CoatiMonday today: an old piece! Around 1998 I did this plot on FurryMuck where I was a robot, and Spaceroo was moved to draw it.

Spaceroo's still around, although more busy with his wife and joeys than with, like, mucking. He still puts kangaroos and dinosaurs and dinoroos on the whiteboards at work.

John Siemer (Spaceroo) - Yerf Historical Archive

Historical archive of work by John Siemer (Spaceroo) from furry/anthro art community Yerf.

The mecha plot got me into the Giants Club for the first time, and that was a great place for me for a long while. Also my recollection is that @jakebe and a friend (Jimmaroo[sp?], whom I'm not sure is still around) got roboticized for their own fun as a sideline to this all.

@Austin_Dern
You know, I'm not sure if I've ever actually been a robot or synthetic being before -- it's always been antithetical to my magical nature. <:)

It would be fun to try, though!

@jakebe You're not? Oh, goodness ... I'm embarrassed if I have conflated you with someone else!

My own feeling is there's not a great conflict between magical and synthetic natures. And I feel the number of old-time amusement parks named Dreamland or described as fairylands supports that. L Frank Baum even wrote a book about the Genie of Electricity that's goofy fun right up to the point you notice he got bored with it.

Anyway fairy and robot is a great, underexplored combination.

@Austin_Dern
You're absolutely right, and now I really want to find a way to make that character. :D
@jakebe I'd love to see what you develop.

Another old-time picture #CoatiMonday: me as drawn by HoneyBadger, for the HoneyBadger's Burrow fanzine, which ran maybe two issues and featured pictures of the dozen-plus regulars in her FurryMuck hangout of the 90s. I was a reliable bookshelf-sitter, back when I was small enough to do that.

https://web.archive.org/web/20150813070114/http://fantod.com/fmport.htm (HoneyBadger's site's still up, but is suffering some database problem).

Character portraits (1)

HoneyBadger's Burrow was a great, reliable, slightly toony hangout for much of the late 90s. It only drifted apart slowly, when HoneyBadger had to step back from the muck, and enough people had lives that took them away from the place's 8-to-11 pm Eastern focal point that it couldn't really sustain itself.

For #CoatiMonday today, also a #MerMay piece! A sketch by bitesizedewalt on birdsite, who'd wanted to do seashore-style pictures.

I so like the water and mer-creatures and webbed paws. If I had canonical shapeshifting powers, I'd take this as a morph.

@[email protected] is someone I liked back in FurryMuck's glory days, and amazed me by remembering me when we got back in touch. (I usually assume people forget me the moment I'm out of sight, whatever our past relationship was.)

Today's #CoatiMonday picture is so new it hasn't dried! Friend @frengers was fascinated by my clay coati form and drew it.

I started playing clay-elemental Austin on FurToonia Muck. It's a great variation, letting me play with transmuting and malleability.

I haven't succeeded in bringing the clay-elemental form to a new roleplay environment but do keep thinking it's a great idea.

Clay (and mud) seem under-used ways to be a gelatinous character; most liquid types seem to like clean or supernatural fluids, me included.

So I'm not sure why I went for something so earthy except I always lean toward the weird unpopular choice, and this fits well with coati.

#CoatiMonday today is my other #MerMay picture! pretor on FurAffinity offered half-fish YCHs and I took the chance.
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/21938007/

Making a mer-creature of a nonanthro is a challenge and I like that this still reads as a fish, not a mer-humanoid.

I always like water creatures (see https://blimps.xyz/@Austin_Dern/102050016541268241 ) and the lionfish half cleverly adapts my tailrings.

Starting my anniversary-month #CoatiMonday with this Savannah Horrocks picture of me and my dear bride BunnyHugger: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/2228804/

It's a us-together con-book sketch BunnyHugger commissioned at Midwest FurFest 2008 and we both look so gorgeously nonanthro here.

My #CoatiMonday anniversary-month pictures continue with a Lyanti sketch that my dear BunnyHugger got at Morphicon 2009: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/2301178/

It may not come through, but there's this little tongue blep coming from me to lick BunnyHugger's cheek. It's such a good little bit of business.

Austin and BunnyHugger by Lyanti by BunnyHugger

A lovely sketch that I bought from Lyanti during Morphicon.

#CoatiMonday has a Morphicon 2011 sketchbook from one of the Ringtail Cafe artists (we didn't get her name). https://www.furaffinity.net/view/7870395/

If you do recognize the artist's signature I'd love to know as people who know the coati muzzle deserve the praise.

I don't do enough with my arboreal-creature nature and it's great that many artists do think to.

Another Couples #CoatiMonday! MWFF 2009 sketchbook art done by Likeshine in a picture true to our endless snuggling.

https://www.furaffinity.net/view/3710867/

As often happens I'm large for @bunnydoe here. I think artists can't resist how adorable we look as a big-coati/small-bunny pair.

This is a sketchbook commission that likeshine did for me at MFF '09.

For #CoatiMonday here's another couples sketchbook picture, even though it's past our wedding anniversary month. By Laura Garabedian, done at MWFF 2011. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/7870513/

If it seems we're always snuggling in pictures it's because Garabedian and other artists represent well how we like simply being together.

For #CoatiMonday more of me snuggling dear @bunnydoe, done by fa/Matuska at Furfright 2012, just ahead of Superstorm Sandy.

My hindpaws clutching BunnyHugger is a thing I do in real life and that's maybe more wonderful even than Matsuka's graceful head shapes.

But also, all those toes and claws are gorgeously rendered. Just look at them.

It's #CoatiMonday! Here's another couples sketch, done by Hibbary at MWFF 2010 featuring nose-touching.

https://www.furaffinity.net/view/7870283/

It's also magnificent for the look of toes, both rabbit and coati, but Hibbary's ears have a fantastic shape it's easy to overlook.

Another snuggling couples #CoatiMonday! My love BunnyHugger's Morphicon 2010 commission from Gravewalker, with me blepped.

https://www.furaffinity.net/view/7870247/

I love the pose, and BunnyHugger sprawling so neatly across me. The markings are all also fantastic. Many pictures have poses that don't show off her markings and this is one of the rare ones you can see her spotting.

Happy early #CoatiMonday! Here, a 2011 Furry Connection North sketchbook picture by Firefeathers, more snuggling.

I know they're Firefeathers' construction lines but enjoy how they give BunnyHugger's face a hyperreal expressiveness.

Another snuggling #CoatiMonday? Could be! Done by FarelleMoon for my darling BunnyHugger at Furry Connection North 2009. We're often drawn as adorable; this is a high point for cute pictures. The valentine hearts are true to real life.

And one ore cuddling #CoatiMonday! Done by CoconutMilkyWay at FCN2012 with maybe BunnyHugger's cutest face ever. It's particularly wonderful for @bunnydoe's face, smiling and eyes just barely peeking open. And there's this solidity to the shapes that stands out.

A last cuddling #CoatiMonday. Each day with my love BunnyHugger is a gift. The day of Christmas 2010, FA/francis_john drew. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/4994126/

I don't think any artist has ever rendered us more fuzzy or with more liquid-looking eyes, or with her headfur looking more lush. And the ever-challenging coati paws come out great. Plus my tail gets to look nice, long, and slender.

Of course there's another cuddling #CoatiMonday, with a picture BunnyHugger drew in June 2008, when we were first a couple. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/1871133/

I had (on SpinDizzy) silver fur then, after the first Shiny Day. And BunnyHugger draws and digitally paints with such lovely touches.

We were about a month from meeting in person when she drew this.

Readying Ourselves by BunnyHugger

Austin Dern and BunnyHugger, together.

For #CoatiMonday another picture my love BunnyHugger drew of me. The lines were done at Christmas 2007 and colors put in around Shiny Day (17 March) 2008. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/1875335/

She draws me to look young, but she makes me feel young. Also I like how blobby and liquid and three-dimensional the silver looks.

The head scruff is more stylish than I usually think I have, but it makes for good cartoon logic; keeps my head from being too boring up top.

#CoatiMonday today is a watercolor picture my love BunnyHugger made in 2011. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/5903625/

It's one of the few color pictures of Austin done in physical media, or that show how raccoon-like the coati body is.

It's also the (not actually) rare picture where I'm just a coati, not silver or melting or a crystal or something peculiar like that.

@Austin_Dern Gosh, that's cute!
@zebratron2084 Thank you. BunnyHugger has great taste in finding commissions, especially in finding people who can draw nonanthros who still show emotions.
@Austin_Dern Thinking of you— one of the solutions in the cryptic crossword I did yesterday (which had a theme of "letter I added to various phrases") was "DRESSCOATI"...
@Austin_Dern adorable!
@Mycroft Thank you and particularly Likeshine for drawing us that way.
