It's fucking impossible to download a video hosted on Reddit, what a shitty website

I don't have a choice, the video is too good: Prime Minister of Luxembourg about Brexit

@Gargron Or... Y'know... The whole thing? Because let's face it, that interviewer... Chose poorly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzcA5qV4S8U

@Gargron
A bit of searching led me to https://www.reddit.com/r/redditisfun/comments/7lnywh/how_can_i_download_vreddit_videos/.json which contains https://v.redd.it/0xt0ozlk8b421/DASH_4_8_M specified as the fallback URL, changing that to https://v.redd.it/0xt0ozlk8b421/audio gets the audio track, then trusty ol' `ffmpeg` to combine the two and make it all small enough and in a format that the Mastodon web interface accepts, et (eventually) viola.
@keithzg @Gargron Or .. you can just use youtube-dl, which has a handler for Reddit Video 😊
@moritzheiber Yeah, in theory. I even updated it and it still only downloaded the video, not the audio, though :/
@keithzg I just downloaded it without any issues .. ? Use the original post URL, not the straight video URL.
@moritzheiber *shrug* that's exactly what I did at first, I'm surprised that it didn't work too!
@Gargron the question is just stupid by the reporter. Basically implies: β€žHelp us or we will kill us all!β€œ
@Gargron youtube-dl will do it, just give it the URL of the page with the video.
@Gargron
Most Android clients can download any video on Reddit (native or 3rd party) because the API exposes the raw content. You can also try using Firefox's native content sniffing.
@Gargron Doesn't even youtube-dl do it? I'm surprised if not.
@Gargron
Not even with special software? Try JDownloader - that might do it?
@Gargron I think that may be to avoid ppl stealing content.
@TotallyNotMiaKhalifa Reddit is entirely built on "stolen" content
@Gargron I was just trying to find a rationale. I agree its frustrating.
