seriously tho I really do have a theory that everyone here had a little too much unsupervised internet time a little too young. if true 4 u, boost 4 science.
@pbandkate i didnt touch a computer until 6 years ago and ive regretted it ever since
@pbandkate one of my great shames is being a forum moderator at age 15. That's too young!
@pbandkate if u didnt pretend to be 30something on forums when u were like 11 u had no childhood
@pbandkate I was racking up long distance bills by dialing in to BBSes in other states when I was 11 or 12. My parents had no idea what I was doing and I had free reign. It just got worse when we got a cable modem.
@breakfastgolem i once broke into my moms email to delete one of those “if you don’t stop pirating we’re gunna shut off your internet” emails before she could see it.
@pbandkate my family computer had parental controls up the wazoo. we used the AOL browser that you had to log into and I couldn't get internet explorer to work. so one time i tried using one of those AOL trial discs to make a new account to get around the parental blocks, and i got caught because it overwrote everyone else's AOL accounts and I didn't know how to restore them. the username that i picked was "bobmickeymouse"
@peemobil thats fuxking spectacular
@pbandkate @peemobil lol yes. i’m old enough that IN MY 20s i had aol dial up & it was by the minute.
@pbandkate didn’t used the internet until I was 10 when a cyber cafe was opened by our neighbors and I would go there almost everyday to play flash games on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network websites
@theinternet ugh yes when I was young and my dad had to bring me to work for whatever reason he would just plop me in front of the screen and it was cartoon network dot com for me the whoooole time

@pbandkate lol it was a great website

in my case I would only pay for like 30 minutes daily until I would get my computer with internet a few years later.

@pbandkate @theinternet did either of you play CN's Cartoon Orbit? where you'd earn digital stickers to make little pages of whatever characters you like from their shows? god that was the SHIT!
@revpox @pbandkate ohh I don’t think I ever came across that but that sounds cool as hell
@revpox @theinternet oh shit I THINK SO. I have very specific memories of a grim adventures game, which like, what a show
@pbandkate @revpox this is just giving me living memories of waiting for the flash shockwave bar to fill up while loading
@theinternet @pbandkate opening up the page and going to get a glass of chocolate milk while this bad boy loaded up
@revpox @theinternet oh fuck yeah look at that PRODUCT DESIGN
@revpox @pbandkate wanna do that right now
@theinternet @pbandkate a lot of the games are still available with a quick google but you might need to install a version of firefox that's shockwave compatible (also googleable)
@revpox @theinternet aw shit good thing im workin from home today baybeee!!
@pbandkate probably true for me but I’m so old my teen internet was mostly AOL chat rooms
@natehousley i think “early chat room adopter” counts too
@pbandkate o yeah, I had my first computer at like 12 and it forever altered my psychological development
@pbandkate no internet for me until I was 17-18, but I had plenty of screen time starting in elementary school
@pbandkate I didn't until college because we had per hour internet for most of my childhood and only one phone line. I didn't even have email till College
@pbandkate Yup, and it came in the form of a game called inklink that rocketed me out of childhood and into finding out that people are out of their minds

@pbandkate

Listen, whipper snapper, there WASN'T an internet when I was young.

@haikukitteh we respect those who paved the way for us 🙏

@pbandkate

Much respect to those growing up with it actually. I can just imagine how I would have posted on the internet all the cringe-worthy shit I wrote down on paper.

Dodged a bullet there.

@haikukitteh yeah my livejournal is still out there somewhere
@pbandkate can't boost, it has 69 boosts and I don't want to be that guy
@pbandkate ye but just a little bit :))
@pbandkate
Yeah and I had the good god damn sense to lie about my age back then too. I been 23 since I was like 12.
@pbandkate i, an outlier, was the exact opposite
