So there appears to be a HUGE influx of new mastodon users. Any idea where this is coming from? Was it media.
@freemo Well, there were API changes on Twitter that are affecting a lot of third party clients. I think much of it must be due to that (I know it is my case).
@modulux Ahh interesting. Good. You've made the right choice :)
@freemo They come from Twitter. They changed their API and removed important features which make third-party apps useless. The Hashtag breakingmytwitter is very popular for that topic.

@freemo mass bans of leftists on twitter

@zoeferal Usually twitter seemed to ban righties as much or more in my experience. Has that changed in recent months maybe?

I left twitter because I saw a few righties banned, im a free speech advocate so while i despise most on the right this was a no go for me.

@freemo @zoeferal What you see probably depends on the circles you move in.
@some_qualia @zoeferal I;m not a righty or a lefty. I find both extremes to be hard to deal with personally.
@freemo @zoeferal Ah. Well, as an actual communist, I’ve gotten death threats from white nationalists and gotten account locks for telling them to go to hell. So. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
@some_qualia @zoeferal Not surprising. I've had the same experience from people both on the right and the left. Most americans are extremist and intolerant on either end of the spectrum. Though there can be exceptions on both sides too.
@freemo a bunch of leftwing twitter folks got banned for nonsense, so they came here with other left twitter users in protest/solidarity.
@freemo Twitter banned a bunch of communist accounts and we’re a pretty large and tight knit community of shitposters. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
@freemo Twitter decided to discontinue their 'Streaming API' which broke most 3rd party twitter clients and now angry people are migrating to Mastodon :P

@freemo The Alex Jones purge may have spooked a lot of people into abandoning the old social media platforms.
@4of92000 fair, their censorship of people in general drove me away.

@freemo But I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot more libertarian-right-themed instances popping up in the near future.

Assuming they don't all just migrate to Minds, Gab and BitChute.

@4of92000 you mean libertarian / right? I tend to agree (just dont see libertarian and right as all that related).

@freemo Well, there's the libertarian right and the libertarian left, and honestly I'd consider Jones what happens when someone from the libertarian right dunks his head in acid (being the psychedelic substance) for four hours.

But no, I'm talking more the Minds/Gab/BitChute crowd who hate censorship and DESPISE the far left in general and "SJW"-ism in particular (which to be fair I don't really have a soft spot for either, considering myself liberal-conservative).

@freemo Basically, the libertarian right is when you take me and keep going.
@4of92000 ahhh i see, ok I can understand that perspective.
@freemo twitter decided that, instead of banning Nazis, they should ban everyone who stood up to Nazis
@Chinchillazilla Must be new tactic. They always seemed to ban people on both sides in the past :(
@freemo Bitcoin Twitter migrating to Mastodon.
@freemo It’s the continuing Twitter squeeze on 3rd party clients and their own tightly-controlled client that makes me wonder if I’ll stay there and if I can find what I want here (frankly, I’m skeptical about the latter... its the QWERTY effect).
@pwgallagher what is it your looking for? That may provide a clue as to if you will find what you want here. I've been here a while so i may be able to give you some idea as to what to expect.
@freemo Thanks, that’s very friendly. Hard to say precisely. My Twitter stream is a fire-hose of people I follow (mostly but not exclusively public policy wonks) none of whom is on Mastodon (according to the Mstdn β€œbridge” facility). So I’m going to give this a little while; try a few instances. See what turns up. 😎

@pwgallagher The system is federated. So you wont get much of a difference between instances in terms of who you can connect with. Its all one massive network.

The difference between instances boils down to moderation policy. the owners of an instance can choose to block people and instances from their instance, and thus no one on that instance can connect with that content. So picking an instance mostly comes down to picking one that suits your desired style of moderation.

This instance is free speech which means we only block people or instances in extreme cases.

@freemo Understood! The local/ federation network is interesting. So far, I like the the Web interface to Mstdn, too. The facilities for conversation and browsing are both pretty neat and Qoto seems like a fast node. So stuff to like already.
@pwgallagher did you check out https://halcyon.qoto.org or https://video.qoto.org yet? The first is a front end that replicates twitter you can use with mastodon here. The other is QOTOs peertube instance. Peertube is federated using the same standard as mastodon but more like youtube. So you can follow an account on peertube and get the videos posted by that account right in your mastodon feed.
Halcyon

@freemo That’s interesting. Unfortunately @pwgallagher cannot log-in to halcyon.qoto.org (β€œinstance does not exist”). WIll try again later.
@pwgallagher you need to do it like this: @ pwgallagher @ qoto.org without the spaces
@pwgallagher If you want to connect with some people quickly you may want to try an introductory post with #introductions in it. Right now the network is extremely active so youll probably start getting connections quickly.
@freemo good tip. Thank you again!
@freemo I saw a tweet about it and thought I'd check it out. Though it took me a while to realise they weren't talking about the band.
@FeckinLife lol, you wont regret it :)
@freemo How many users are there? And how am I seeing your posts/toots? Not that I'm complaining. Lol

@FeckinLife In the whole network (federated timeline)? Millions registered.

You're seeing my toots cause all new users automatically follow me since im one of the admin of QOTO

@freemo Apparently not Twitter.

@freemo I hadn't heard about it until about a week ago and only by chance via rss feeds from pinboard.in. << I think that's it. Also, people are fed up with state social media, TBH. I used to administer a dozen accounts for various folks and chose to part with the money and close my own accounts.

All that & Jack fucking 3rd party Twitter apps.

Most corporations make the choice to focus on earnings growth (and shareholders) -after- sustained profitability. #Twitter has it #bassackwards.

@h4xz0r Only reason I noticed it so quickly is because I administer my own instance that has a follow bot. So all the alarms went off the second the load started maxing out. Not to mention the huge spike in new users on the follow bot.
@freemo this instance is having the same issues having to do with asyncio.
