I felt the story really hit its stride here! The exposition was alright, but obviously leading up to something, and now that we found it (the countdown, wow!), I can't wait to see where this leads.

The computer game is a great touch, and I wonder when our protagonist will let go of his fear and disbelief to realise its purpose.

The whole issue at the heart of the novel reminds me of Greg Egan, who likes to pull stunts like this.

@rixx I really liked this book (and it's two successors)!
I'd like to check out Greg Egan: anything you can recommend?
@gimbar All three of the Subjective Cosmology series! They don't build on each other at all, so you can pick and choose. I enjoyed "Quarantine" the most due to its brilliant premise, but Permutation City was also great. Distress is probably the one I wouldn't recommend directly unless you read and liked the other two, since it's... Different. (Good though! Physics Congress on an anarchist island turned dramatic)
@rixx More than one reason to readit in chronological order. Ahhh satisfaction 😺
@gimbar Heh, let me know if you read it! It's probably my favourite among theoretical physics scifi so far (but I'm not finished with Three Body Problem yet).
@rixx Will do! I'm eager to hear your impression/opinion on The Three Body Problem when you've finished it. I'm always a little hesitant in talking about books to people who haven't completed it to not spoil anything.
@rixx This was a really good tip as far as I am!
