I am interested in chaordic organizations. Organizations that exist at the edge of chaos and order, that are self-adaptive to change.

Dee Hock writes about this
https://www.ratical.org/many_worlds/ChaordicOrg.pdf

I designed a Berlin and San Francisco based program: the Collaboration Incubator. We are experimenting with building a chaordic network based on #socialtechnologies like #dragondreaming, #presencing and #commoning

#socialcoop folks, please join us.

As entertaining as Dee Hock's paper is, it seems to contain next to no information. What else could I read?

Thanks for sharing, @Manuela

@RefurioAnachro @Manuela hi, what are you interested in concretely? Specific processes?

Dee Hock goes to great length to underline his anti-authoritan character, then explains that concentration of power and stagnant structures are a problem, and that to build something as big as VISA it was necessary to defuse ownership by having many many owners.

What I want to know is how to do that. More about VISA's history, perhaps. Or about other cases: methods, objectives, problems, or lessons. What are self-organizing forms? Can you suggest other articles or papers, @Manuela?

@RefurioAnachro Yes, I can answer that. I work since some years with a meta-framework called Dragon Dreaming Project Design. It's not prefect, it's not complete, but it provides a practical philosophy & operating system plus some accessible tools, to design projects in an chaordic spirit. To start, please read the ebook and keep discussing. I am happy to reflect on this approach critically and share what I know.

@Manuela, I'm sorry, but that won't scale at all! I'm not looking for a small place to stay for myself, but for a way to free people at scale!

That Dee Hock legend, I think its most remarkable aspect is the diplomatic achievement, that he united so many fiercely powerhungry players.

Also, @Manuela, have you considered that personality cults are very prone to abuse? And difficult to sustain, once their 'charismatic' leader drops out (for whatever reason).

I think we need less emphasis on spirituality (the scientific term would be psychology, and in spite of its many shortcomings, there's lots of useful stuff people have found out), and focus more on social contracts, and technology.

Here's a discussion that ends up being about the pains of mastodon becoming popular:

Read all the fun links! It's not just about moderation, but later on also about sustaining subculture.

I hope we can still have that discussion about freeing and empowering people through better structures, @Manuela.

If not, or maybe not on this day, that'd be fine, too. At least I had the chance to amend what may easily be misunderstood as off topic, or even offensive.

Is there a good write-up of how Mastodon is more resistant to abuse and bad actors? Curious to what extent it's just a matter of time/scale before things get worse.

@Manuela, I watched a bit of the interview you linked to indirectly:

"Michel Baumens on the Commons & on systemic, organisational, personal transformation"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVgZczNFcpE

He has some interesting points, but the sheer scale of VISA suggests that these personal transformative concepts aren't quite up to something like this...

@RefurioAnachro thanks for digging into this! What I learned from dee hock is how important shared purpose is and that unleashing the purpose is a continuous process. I learned that an organization is an organism and that a rewarding and effective thing you can do to help it’s self-organizing is building trust among the people. The Collaboration Incubator tries to build on this. There are ways to unleash purpose and vision, to build trust, to collaborate better, we experiment with those.
@Manuela, that being said, I do admire your engagement, and community building is important, but not as much of a challenge as doing things at large, or defending an organisation against exploitation.

@RefurioAnachro I try to understand your thinking. so you are looking for ways to scale: what? liberation? and what you understood so far, what I suggested to look at, is something that is focussed on personality cults and psychology? And you are looking more for: structures? I think what I posted helps building that.

The topic we are discussing is too complex to talk about on a general level. If we could use a very specific question or case, that could maybe lead to something more productive?

@RefurioAnachro I think the beginning of our conversation was on how to practically build organizations that are chaordic=that don't i.e. have a leader or legal body in the center. to start the discussion on how to do that, I shared as an example Dragon Dreaming, one way to approach that. The patterns used in this framework can be scaled and help integrating both: innate human nature AND structures. it can include tech 100%. To explain that well, the PDF I sent might be insufficient...?
@Manuela, I don't think we can have anything on a scale that matters without a legal body of kinds. We need to find something that works in spite of these gears the world is traditionally made of. We can't really go back to a natural state.
@RefurioAnachro @Manuela the networks and organizations I think of are working with legal bodies. It’s all working in the world today. It’s just the the legal bodies are not the organization, they just serve the organization. A practical example are open value networks like #sensorica http://www.sensorica.co - i am not promoting ignoring how we live today. solutions need work today especially also in the civilized world.
SENSORICA

SENSORICA: an open, decentralized and self-organizing value network, designing, producing, and distributing sensing and sensemaking solutions.

@RefurioAnachro p.s. Visa in it's early days was diffrent, it's not a role model of an chaordic organization anymore today.
