Астрологи объявили месяц статей про ZX Spectrum, звук и Arduino. Количество публикаций увеличилось вдвое! В прошлый раз я показывал, как можно перенести однобитные, они же «биперные», музыкальные «движки» с ZX Spectrum на Arduino. Но всё-таки это была максимально нишевая тема внутри нишевой темы, весьма узкоспециализированный проект. Сегодня сделаю шаг ближе к народу. Расскажу, как работает легендарный звуковой чип AY-3-8910, как написать его простой эмулятор полностью с нуля, и как проиграть им музыкальный файл формата PT3 на обычной Arduino Nano.

... spent half the weekend trying to find out why I wasn't able to play a musical scale on the #ay89xx despite having all the formulae for caluclating the tone period implemented correct. some notes were played correctly 🎶 , others sounded like a fart ... 💨

turns out that I did 8 bit masking when I should have done 16 bit masking for the 12 bit of the coarse tune/fine tune registers ... *doh* ... 🤦‍♂️

AY3-8910 and YM2149 make a valiant attempt at doing a bit of the loader music written by Rob Hubbard for the 1984 game sanxion. Not bad for these humble and in comparison to the SID inferior sound chips. I'll come back to this when the rig is free and do the whole thing.

Making good progress on my BBC Micro LZSS-based music player. I've just implemented SWRAM usage/bank switching to playback some very large tunes. This one doesn't need it as compressed it fits in main memory:
