#yegfringe holdover edition:
'52 Stories'
A one-person show in which a fellow memorizes the order of a deck of cards.
But each card represents a person in his life, the action they enact, with an object. This gives him the system to 'chunk' together the order of the deck of audience-shuffled cards.
But here's the thing that makes this process a performance - he explains his associations with various people from his life.
And that's what makes this another extraordinary piece in this year's #yegfringe
5/5

#yegfringe Rat Academy had no business being that good.

Ok I actually saw one more! I saw Plan V at The Faculty (along Whyte, not St Jean). It was an entertaining sci-fi-ish multimedia more modern take on the vagina monologues. I enjoyed it, and realized at the end that I'd definitely seen the artist do similar work in the past.

I heard after that someone else reviewed the show by saying that "she yelled a lot and then flashed us!" which I'm pretty sure they meant negatively but honestly it's a pretty apt description and I think if that doesn't scare you off it's probably the show for you too lol.

And my last show of the regular fringe was yesterday's showing of The Illusory Magic Of Sitruc James, which was a blast. Very fun and funny magic show if you're into that. I get the impression this is a touring show so if it comes to your fringe and you like magic check it out.

On Friday I finally, after decades of going to the fringe, managed to make it out to Die-Nasty fit the first time! It was a hell of a lot of fun and Naheed Nenshi was in the audience and came up on stage to take part in the improvised soap opera, where apparently he had made a fringe play that was badly reviewed and had to defend it lol.

Go to this one next year if you want to hear a lot of inside baseball jokes about the fringe and maybe see a minor local celebrity do something silly.

On Wednesday I saw 2 Magic Rubies, 1 Private Eye, which was a film noir detective magic show. I particularly liked his story interleaved with a controlled shuffle of a deck of cards that reflected what was happening in the story. Lots of funny off color jokes as well. Was a fun time!

On Tuesday I saw "Quiz Icarus" which was a couple of guys who managed to get on Jeopardy! talking about their experiences (at separate times). It was fun and well told and they had a couple audience members play a little mini game of Jeopardy with them on stage which was neat.

Not sure if they're touring the show but they weren't local so maybe? Check your local fringe for them maybe. :)

Ok I kinda fell behind on fringe reviewlettes sorry :(

I've seen a few shows since !SNAFU, and I'll do some quick words about them even though I think almost all of them have finished their runs. But for posterity!

Cold is mostly cleared up this morning. Was thinking I might manage to do something for the last day of the Fringe Fest. But just trying to pick two shows to see was enough to use up all my energy, so I think I'll take another day of rest.

The Fringe somehow manages to be so enticing yet so awful for my tired, ADHD brain. So much fun, weird, wonderful, stuff, all in short doses, mix it up! Sounds great!

But in reality: so many choices to make, while cross-referencing schedules, venue maps, ticket prices and availability, and you have to buy tickets in advance, and if you're running late you're out of luck. I always end up spending more time trying to plan a day at the Fringe (and then planning a different day because I was too tired or whatever for the first plan) than actually going to shows.

But anyway: Fringe Holdover extra performances start Tuesday (although most are next Friday & Sat):

#yegfringe 'Dressing Room Requiem'
One of the must-see productions we get to every year is the Opera in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in the main chapel. We've seen some HEAVY minor Puccini super-Catholic dreariness, and some so-so Gilbert & Sullivan - an aquired taste that I grew up with enduring.
But a selection of Opera's Greatest Hit's with the chorus coming in at the end! Yes Sir! I don't care how silly the connecting story is, I could watch this all evening.
What a fantastic show and setting, Pop Goes The Opera 'Dressing Room Requiem' gets 6/5 from me!
