Virtual Insanity: a macOS rant.

I use linux-based systems most of the time, and for a long time now I have a set of four virtual desktops (or workspaces) on which I distribute my applications according to certain rules.

Since macOS supports workspaces, I set them up the way I am used to and was utterly confused when they switched positions?!?

The fuck?

At least that can be disabled, but come on. Intuitive? Nope.

In an upcoming episode: Per-folder view settings in finder.

I think i should really set up a cronjob with sudo killall coreaudiod

i'm doing this for i don't know how many years, every 2 weeks at least.

I just dropped some cash on a WD Black M.2 SSD, and a 40Gbit Thunderbolt 4 enclosure for it. This will be the fastest external drive I’ve ever owned…

…and I’m going to use it to try to have Time Machine backups that don’t take hours to move 600MB.

Ok I am annoyed enough now to have to ask: on my iPad, Books has decided for some reason to *not* download all the books; instead, I have to select one to read, and download it, and then I can read it.

I have 200+ GBYTES FREE FFS.

There doesn’t seem to be a “download all books” option.

For no particular reason I'm going to note that MacOS has horrible out-of-resources behaviours.

Say, failing to accurately report the amount of free disk, failing to free space when files are deleted (or even "zeroed" as seasoned Unix/Linux admins have learnt to do), with tools (o hai tmutil) which fail to work as advertised, or at all, in single-user / recovery mode, etc., etc.

And in completely separate news, it's nice to be back on the Fediverse ...
