Suggestions:
Fill in your bio, as you wish to present yourself. Pseudonymous is fine, but blank really isn't.
POST. The thing that matters most is having something to show for. And not just boosts (re-shares). See @pluralistic for an excellent example of #POSSE (post to your own site, syndicate elswewhere), #IndieWeb
Engage. If you want to be visible to people comment, fave, or boost others' toots. Not wantonly but appropriately.
Use hashtags. Mastodon / the Fediverse has parlous few discovery / search aids. Hashtags help tremendously. You can also search / pin hashtags to follow conversation on a given topic. Your profile can feature your own signficicant hashtags.
Pinned toots. Most servers will allow up to four of these. I dedicate one to "administrivia", and use that as a thread to post specific information relevant to my profile.
