Tell Your Senator(s) to Vote NO on the Silencing Americans Act

Republicans are once again pushing what we’re calling the “Silencing Americans Act,” a dangerous bill that would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote. The House passed it last session, but it never made it to the Senate—now they’re bringing it back in an attempt to restrict access to the ballot. The Silencing Americans Act (H.R. 22 and S. 128) would require every voter to show proof of citizenship, like a passport or original birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections. That might sound simple, but the reality is that millions of eligible voters don’t have these documents readily available. Because the bill would require showing this proof in person, it would eliminate online and mail-in voter registration. This bill wouldn’t improve election security—it would just make it significantly harder for everyday Americans to vote. It has already passed the House and if it passes the Senate, the Silencing Americans Act would disproportionately impact: Married women who have changed their last names, many of whom don’t have birth certificates matching their legal name Trans and nonbinary people who’ve changed their names to reflect their gender identity Naturalized citizens who could face additional barriers and intimidation Military members, tribal citizens, and working-class Americans, who may not have easy access to these documents And others! We’ve seen the damage of similar laws in states like Kansas and Arizona, where thousands of eligible voters were blocked from registering. Americans without citizenship status are already barred from voting in federal elections, and states have secure systems in place to verify voter eligibility—this bill is unnecessary. Fill out the form with your information (feel free to add an optional additional comment, if you like), and we'll make sure your email is delivered to your senator(s). The email to your senators:

‘We’re all sitting ducks’ without more substantial gun control, Georgia senator says

The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more victims are killed or wounded.
A mass murder is one in which four or more victims are killed.

J D #Vance “talks about hardening our schools and making them secure
– well the reality is this is happening in spas, in shopping malls”, Senator Raphael #Warnock said on CNN.

💥“It’s happening in houses of worship, in medical clinics.
🆘“What are we going to do? Make the whole country into a fort?”

He told NBC:
⚠️“We’re all sitting ducks. And any country that allows this to continue without putting forward just common sense safety measures is a country that has – in a tragic way – lost its way.”

Warnock alluded to an April 2023 Fox News poll which reaffirmed that ✅the vast majority of Americans favored strengthening gun safety laws.
✅And he said Congress took an encouraging first step toward treating such public support as a mandate when it enacted bipartisan legislation that expanded background checks for the youngest gun buyers while funding mental health and violence intervention programs.

🆘But what was the first major federal firearms safety bill to pass Congress in nearly three decades was “clearly not enough”, Warnock said,
noting how the US continues recording a number of mass shootings that is disproportionate at the global level.

❇️ Warnock said polls show most in the US overwhelmingly support universal background checks.
❇️ Furthermore, Warnock said that large numbers of Americans support banning general access to assault-style rifles and semi-automatic firearms.

❌Yet federal lawmakers have not been able to get enough votes to clear procedural hurdles preventing Congress from meaningfully consider either issue.

Warnock on Sunday blamed that reality on congressmembers who
– out of ambition or fear
– accept financial support from the wealthy gun industry.#

🔥“We are at an impasse because there are people in … politics … who are doing the bidding of the #corporatist #gun #lobby even as they line their pockets with the blood of our children,” Warnock said.

‘We’re all sitting ducks’ without more substantial gun control, Warnock says

Georgia senator Raphael Warnock urges Congress to ‘pass laws to deal with this’ after deadly school shooting in his state

The Guardian

This week, at the Democratic National Convention, the speeches of #Michelle #Obama and the Second Gentleman #Doug #Emhoff (and maybe #Lil #Jon’s, if you want to call that a speech) stood out.

But there was one speech, in particular, that struck me: 🔥The sermon-like words of Sen. #Raphael #Warnock (D-Ga.).

Warnock has served as senior pastor at Atlanta’s historic #Ebenezer #Baptist #Church for nearly 20 years.
His election on January 5, 2021 was one of two pivotal, and highly covered, Senate races in Georgia.

That made him a national figure, of sorts. But not exactly a household name. If you don’t know Warnock well, it’s worth remembering he is a pastor who invokes his Christianity as a foundation of his politics.

⭐️He clearly brings that power to the secular pulpit in his speech on the first night of the DNC, telling of the need to heal a nation that has long been broken.

#Michelle #Obama might have done a bit of call-and-response.

But it is hard to imagine anyone else pulling off calling Donald Trump a “#plague,” as Warnock does, with such heft.

Raphael Warnock told the DNC to "keep the faith." He restored mine in the process.

The senator from George made space for hope -- and righteous cynicism.

"Faith abounds at the Democratic National Convention, but don’t be surprised. Trump staffers have called the left ‘godless,’ but this year’s DNC painted a very different picture."

Jack Jenkins cites Sen. Raphael Warnock:

“I think it’s important, particularly for those of us in the Democratic Party, to be full-throated in the ways our faith informs our values. We’ve got to be full-throated in resisting this idea of Christian nationalism.”

"We should all demand, including in states like mine that don’t have early voting and no-excuse absentee voting, the right to go souls to the polls, in whatever for that takes for us. Go from your church, your temple, your mosque. Have a voting brunch or a neighborhood walk to the polls. Do whatever it takes. Voting should be easy. It should be encouraged. But far too often, it isn’t."

Dropping names — #Whitmer! #Shapiro! #Warnock! — like a groupie backstage at a heavy-metal concert, floating wildly implausible scenarios, stretching so hard for historical analogies that several probably blew out a hamstring, America’s pundit class managed to achieve a level of groupthink that surpassed the brainwashers of The Manchurian Candidate.
