“I see how stories suffer when a writer attempts to fit the play-by-play of an entire experience into a few thousand words.”

Lavinia Spalding, editor of "The Best Women's Travel Writing," shares what editing the series has taught her:

Startling how quickly things change in the hospitality scene. I had an article published in April 2024 listing 9 places of interest in Fremantle, and already on this trip I can see that two of the restaurants and bars I recommended have closed.

We had the same tricky problem when I used to research destinations for Lonely Planet guidebooks. You'd want to add in some popular new places so it wasn't just the same old favourites, but there was always the risk a new place would go belly-up. Roll the dice...

Here's my first article in Traveller's 'My Happy Place' series - woven around the happy extra week I spent in Cairns as an accidental refugee from Melbourne's fifth pandemic lockdown in 2021:

Stuck in a northern tropical city, my workday routine became a dream

After breakfast at a cafe, I’d work a few hours at the local library before heading to the lagoon for a swim. It wasn’t long before I started wondering if I could live here.

New at my Patreon... At a piano bar, a stranger asked me if I used a generative AI app to write my travel articles. When I reacted with bemusement, along the lines of "Why would I?", she was similarly bemused. This is why I think generative AI is both unethical and irredeemably derivative, especially for travel writing:

Napisałem bardziej refleksyjnie o Theth — nie jako o zestawie atrakcji, ale jako o dolinie, która ma własny rytm, historię i ciężar krajobrazu.

Theth: dolina, która nie jest tylko punktem na mapie

Eseistyczne spojrzenie na Theth jako dolinę z własnym rytmem, pamięcią i krajobrazem.

The good thing about thinking I had jury duty this week (I've since been excused) is that I knuckled down yesterday to write this week's Patreon posts in advance.

Sneak preview: tomorrow's post is about the unlikely back story of the gorgeous locomotive you can see in the photo below. If you'd like to read all about it, join my happy group of patrons now at this link: https://www.patreon.com/timrichards
