13th finished book of the year:
The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent

4.75⭐️

This proved to be a real rollercoaster of emotions, and an exceptionally strong end to this duology that really builds on the twists and turns of the first book. The world building continued to be very satisfying, with just the right about of detail being given to introduce new characters and locations as we see the political landscape dramatically shift once again.

The new POV switching format gives a lot more insight into the very complex relationship between the two main characters than we got in the first book. This really helps to convey their motivations and show how the feelings they have for one another evolve over the course of the story.

Broadbent’s decision to announce there would be three separate but interconnected duoligies in the Crown of Nyaxia series allows the arc to come to a conclusion without feeling grief that we’ll see no more of the world. So as the House of Night pairing comers to an end, it’s only excitement that I feel going forward, knowing there will be the first book in the House of Shadow set next. It doesn’t hurt that she’s indicated that one of my favourite characters from this book will be the FMC in that next duology.
