L’amministrazione statunitense di Donald Trump perde i pezzi. Con un annuncio a sorpresa, per di più giunto durante il blocco navale contro l’Iran, il segretario della Marina John Phelan si è dimesso “con effetto immediato” dal proprio incarico. A prendere il suo posto ad interim è il sottosegretario Hung Chao.
La decisione è stata resa nota dal Dipartimento della Guerra degli Stati Uniti (ossia l’ex Pentagono), guidato dal controverso segretario alla Difesa Pete Hegseth, con un breve e asettico comunicato. Alla base del passo indietro di Phelan, miliardario collezionista d’arte e finanziatore della campagna che ha portato Donald Trump al bis alla Casa Bianca, ci sarebbero i continui contrasti proprio con Hegseth e con il suo vice, Steve Feinberg.

Sempre secondo i media statunitensi, il principale terreno di scontro tra Phelan e Hegseth riguarderebbe il mancato rilancio della cantieristica nazionale per la produzione di navi da guerra, droni navali e missili. Un ritardo che l’amministrazione ha scaricato proprio sul segretario della Marina uscente, di fatto spingendolo alle dimissioni.
Quel che è certo è che l’uscita di Phelan si inserisce in un contesto più ampio di tensioni e avvicendamenti ai vertici del Pentagono guidato da Hegseth. Proprio quest’ultimo, infatti, negli ultimi mesi ha promosso una serie di rimozioni ai massimi livelli militari che ha destato l’allarme dei democratici, secondo cui sarebbe in corso una deriva bellicista.

L'Unità: Trump, retromarcia sul cessate il fuoco con l’Iran: via libera unilaterale alla tregua dopo le minacce, negoziati in stallo

Una prova di forza dell’Iran, una di evidente debolezza della Casa Bianca. Martedì sera il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump ha annunciato l’estensione del cessate il fuoco con la Repubblica Islamica, che sarebbe scaduto oggi, mercoledì 22 aprile.
Una tregua nei combattimenti senza una fine certa, con Trump che ha sottolineato col solito post sul suo social Truth che il cessate il fuoco durerà fino a quando le discussioni con l’Iran non saranno concluse “in un modo o nell’altro”, termini a dir poco criptici.
Trump ha motivato l’annuncio dicendo che al momento l’Iran è troppo diviso per negoziare un accordo stabile: si tratta di una considerazione confermata da numerose indiscrezioni che danno il regime particolarmente diviso al suo interno, con l’ala più dura formata dai Guardiani della rivoluzione, i Pasdaran, contrari ad accordi con la Casa Bianca, e l’ala più “riformista” formata dal ministro degli Esteri iraniano Abbas Araghchi e dal presidente Masoud Pezeshkian a favore di una linea più “conciliante” con gli Stati Uniti.
Si tratta in ogni caso di una mossa unilaterale da parte di Washington, dato che l’estensione del cessate il fuoco è stata dichiarata esclusivamente dagli Stati Uniti e non è stata concordata con l’Iran, che per tutta la giornata di martedì ha fatto attendere una sua presa di posizione ufficiale sul secondo round di colloqui di pace da tenere ancora una volta a Islamabad, in Pakistan, decidendo alla fine di non presentarsi.
La scelta di Trump smentisce le ripetute dichiarazioni dello stesso presidente degli Stati Uniti, che per giorni ha ripetuto che la Casa Bianca avrebbe ripreso a bombardare pesantemente l’Iran in caso non si fosse trovato un accordo con Teheran.
Da parte sua la Repubblica Islamica ha ribadito ancora una volta la sua condizione chiave per sedersi al tavolo delle trattative in Pakistan: l’eliminazione da parte americana del blocco navale fuori lo stretto di Hormuz. L’ambasciatore iraniano alle Nazioni Unite Amir Saeid Iravani lo ha definito “una violazione del cessate il fuoco”, sottolineando che appena verrà tolto “ci saranno nuovi incontri a Islamabad”.

Trump’s choice contradicts the repeated statements of the same United States president, who for days had repeated that the White House would resume heavy bombing of Iran if no agreement were found with Tehran.

On its part, the Islamic Republic reiterated once again its key condition for sitting at the negotiating table in Pakistan: the removal by the Americans of the naval blockade outside the Strait of Hormuz. Una destinazione tra le più infauste sul pianeta.
Secondo il New York Times, il gruppo comprende interpreti per le forze armate statunitensi, ex membri delle forze per le operazioni speciali afghane e familiari di militari americani. Gli afghani vivono in un limbo in Qatar da più di un anno, dopo essere stati evacuati dagli Stati Uniti per la loro sicurezza in quanto avevano sostenuto le forze americane durante la guerra contro i talebani, iniziata nel 2001.
Shawn VanDiver, presidente del gruppo umanitario AfghanEvac, ha riferito di essere stato informato del piano relativo al Congo da funzionari del Dipartimento di Stato, aggiungendo che agli afghani sarebbe offerta anche la possibilità di tornare a casa.
