A ★★★★½ review of The Burning (1981)

One of the most criminally underrated slasher flicks to come out of the 80s boom. It's weird to think that Cropsy never became at least a mild icon and got a few sequels given how good this movie is. What sets it apart from so many other slashers of its day is that so many of the counsellors, or shear fodder for Cropsy, is that while many of them fit the stereotype caricatures, they are brought to life in a way that makes them truly feel like real people, something that is sorely lacking in so many slasher flicks. I just tried to point out a possible answer to your question.

You know, your question about why #theBurning is still so obscure?

And the kids learnt a valuable lesson that weekend: You can achieve anything if you’re sufficiently motivated.

A ★★★★ review of The Burning (1981)

This has everything you’d expect in a 1981 summer camp horror movie: short shorts, misogynistic teenage boys/men who don’t understand the word, “no”, incredibly bad hair styles, oh and of course a psychotic serial killer bent on revenge. It’s not exactly a flattering portrayal of a burn victim, but the prologue does give the impression that he was already a horrible guy and apparently it’s based on an urban myth so really this is just his character coming to fruition I guess. Everyone is good looking, the counselors are surprisingly sensible at times (not all of them). There’s bullying of

Chirp Books has the audiobook for The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter available for just $5 for a limited time. If you haven't read this, I would recommend it. I read it in 2021, gave it a 4-star rating, and noted that it was reminiscent of Red Rising to me.

Having quite the phase of reading feminist YA fiction. 'Blood Moon", "The Eternal Return of Clara Hart" and now this: "The Burning" by the incredible Laura Bates (the creator of the #EverydaySexism campaign). Really interesting dual narrative of a young girl experiencing sexual shaming at school and online - with the past story of a young woman accused of witchcraft. Clever and thoughtful - highly recommended #AmReading #Books #LauraBates #TheBurning #EverydaySexism @bookstodon @edutooters
