This is very cool. I feel like I've just unlocked a new level of hacker nerd.

Progress on the #frankenscope. Since all the software is networked, I just moved the scanning stack onto a cube PC. The machine is connected via one of our edge routers to 5G, and sits in a #tailscale/#headscale network.

That turns it into a fully remote operated #microscope. I can explore the slide, mark an extent, start a scan and monitor the progress.

Currently I am still tuning the scanning process, which seems to be ever so slightly running away from what should be a mechanical endstop. Then some traveling, and still crossing fingers for some more content to #setzkasten soon.

One pretty cool thing about this is that because I have my whole network on Tailscale (including my phone) and am running a Pihole DNS server for that Tailnet I can internally use my local IP address for my Mastodon server, so when I use Mastodon myself everything stays inside the home.

Using Pi-hole as a DNS Server for my Tailnet - blog.thms.uk

Use Pi-hole as a DNS server across your entire Tailnet with Tailscale, without forcing all traffic through an exit node. Ad blocking and internal DNS everywhere.

A conversation started with:
“Is there an AirDrop for Windows?”
My answer was Tailscale, though that undersells it a bit.
What I like most is that it replaced several annoying parts of remote access for me:
• less messing with port forwarding
• less dealing with unreliable sync tools
• less thinking about network setup in general
Now I mostly just connect to the machine I need, by name, and keep moving.
I wrote up how I use it here:

Part 140: Monitor Tailscale with Zabbix | What's up, home?

I monitor my home with Zabbix & Grafana and do some weird experiments with them. Want to know how to monitor your Apple Watch with Zabbix? Your surroundings? AI? You got it here.

The second QA team basically serves to evaluate how well the first QA team is doing; if the first QA team keeps missing defects, fire them. Now, that second QA team has little incentive to produce that outcome for their friends. So maybe they don’t look too hard; after all, the first QA team missed the defect, it’s not unreasonable that we might miss it too.
#Microservices got a bad name because they were too micro; in the original terminology, a “micro” service was exactly the right size for a “two pizza team” to build and operate on their own. With AI, maybe it's one pizza and some tokens.
